I sighed tiredly and looked up at the sky that had no stars.
Dad said that there were stars there, but the toxic fumes hid them from sight. He told me to think of a regular cloud, but a cloud made of dense smog covering the entirety of the Undercity. He said that was why we didn't see stars and why it was even hard to see the moon when the factories and plants pushed production.
The people of the Lanes yearned for the stars, but all always ended up falling to the below.
Right now, I was trying to understand why Vi did what she did.
I had thought we were all good...
Then she goes and blows up at me, says I'm betraying the crew, and storming off in a fit of rage before I could even say anything back?
Was my talking to Scarlett that bad?
We usually exchanged information every so often to keep the peace between our two groups. I give her some information about a warehouse that might have some valuables and she gives me information about any possible threats coming our way.
It was a win-win situation.
Right?
Instead, I came back to Vi looking pissed and glaring at me like I had done something to her personally. Which I didn't, but she seemed to think so. Then she started screaming at me in the middle of The Last Drop without a care in the world. Dad works hard for those customers. He has a reputation to uphold so his kids screaming at each other when they're trying to enjoy there evening was not ideal.
Of course, Dad questioned me about it and I told him what Vi said...
And then he got this...
Weird look on his face...
He nodded at me and told me I could go.
And that was that.
No punishment.
No yelling.
No...
Anything.
I walked out of his office more confused than when I came in and immediately came to the rooftop to think. It was my safe space where no one came. No interruptions. Just quiet. I usually came up here every few days to center myself.
I may like The Last Drop, but the loud music can get annoying day after day.
I can still feel the pounding in my ear sometimes when I wake up.
I chuckled a little at that but was startled when a deep voice called out suddenly.
"So, this is where you were..." Dad said as he closes the distance between me and him.
"Give me some warning next time, Dad! I almost fell to my death!" I huffed, trying to straighten myself out.
"You would have been fine." Dad replied, waving his hand in the air like it was no big deal.
I almost die and he's nonchalant about it...
When Dad finally reached me, he sat down next to me, and we sat in comfortable silence.
I didn't know why he was here, but I would wait until he talked.
"Would you like to control the beast, Dina?" Dad asked after a while.
