"This was an escape plan Carefully timed it, so let me goAnd dive into the waves below"
Cold stone did not simply touch, it consumed. It pressed into my cheek with a damp, invasive insistence, seeping through my skin and bone until it felt as though the chill had lodged itself somewhere behind my eyes. The surface beneath me was uneven and grainy, and every slight shift dragged particles of grit across my face, scratching me, reminding me exactly where I was, forcing me to stay present in a reality I had been trying to mentally escape. The air felt wrong because it was too thick and already used. It carried the smell of mildew blooming in corners no one cared about, of rust breaking down into dust, and something faintly organic that had stayed trapped here for too long. Every breath I pulled in scraped down my throat, dry and sour, as if even the oxygen resisted being taken.
For a long time, my body had not been resting. It had been performing.
I had not been still in the way people think of stillness. I had been holding myself in place with force. Every muscle had been locked into silence. Every reflex had been cut off before it could show. I had stopped every twitch, every swallow, every shift of breath before it could give me away. It was not passive. It was controlled. Brutally controlled. My limbs had burned in that stillness, a deep ache that never eased. The tingling had faded long ago and turned into something worse, a numbness so complete it felt like parts of me had stopped existing.
But I was still there. Fully aware.
I had been watching. Counting. Waiting.
The memory of the vial came back sharp and clear. I could still see the needle catching the light. I could still feel the way everyone in that room had expected me to give in. They thought I would take it. They thought I had no choice.
I moved my head. Just slightly. It felt like dragging my entire body through resistance just to change the angle by a fraction. That was all it took.
The liquid never entered my veins. It slid away, soaked into fabric, disappeared.
Their mistake.
My survival.
Keeping that hidden almost broke me. Because survival does not end when the danger passes. It stretches. It demands patience long after you want to collapse.
Now the manor was no longer quiet.
It was breaking apart.
The silence that used to press down on me had been replaced by chaos. Boots slammed against the floor. Voices overlapped, collided, snapped at each other. Orders came too fast, too loud, too uncontrolled.
This was not strategy.
This was fear.
I could hear it in the way the sound moved. In the way it echoed unevenly. In the way everything felt sharper, faster, unstable.
My heart reacted instantly. It slammed against my ribs so hard it almost hurt, sending sudden, overwhelming sensation through a body that had forgotten what movement even felt like.
Then I heard him.
Adrian.
Not calm. Not controlled.
"Zayn! He's here! Do you hear me? He's here! Lock it down! I want every exit sealed now!"
The name hit me like impact.
Zayn.
Hope did not come softly. It hit like an explosion in my chest. My lungs locked, my breath catching so sharply it hurt. My fingers curled into my palms so hard my nails cut into my skin. I needed that pain. I needed something real to hold onto. Blood rushed back into my body all at once, overwhelming, almost too much.
