"So, what did the doctor say?"

Nolan smiled to himself.

Nolan: "Mm.. it's nothing. He gave me something so I don't feel nausea as much."

The sound of people's chatter and footsteps echoed off the walls and through my ears. It was kind of annoying. Nolan picked a bag off of a shelf and put in in the cart in front of me.

Nolan: "Lou, can we go out tonight?"

"Yeah, of course."

Nolan: "I want to tell you about something. It's a surprise so don't ask me..."

I tilted my head while he led me to the produce section of the store.

Nolan: "Lou, look at this box! It's so cute!"

He held up a box of strawberries that had a cartoon strawberry on the label. Whoever drew it, gave her long green eyelashes and a pink tutu. I held back a laugh with a smile.

"Yeah.. cute.."

Nolan: "Can we get them?"

"Just because the box...?"

Nolan: "Yeah!"

I sighed and nodded.

Nolan: "And they're plant based, too."

He smiled happily and placed the box into the cart.

When we got to the lineup, there was one guy in front of us. Real grumpy looking.

Cashier: "For pride month, can I interest you in one of our pride pins? 1 dollar-"

The guy in front of us looked immediately offended. He scratched his beard aggressively.

Man: "Hell naw. Do I look gay to you?"

He definately didn't to me. He was more like those old Texan guys in the movies who owned a ranch and turned out to be a murderer or something.

Cashier: "Uh- no, sir. We're just.. supposed to ask everyone during pride month-"

Man: "Tell ya what.. ask the twinks behind me. 'Cause I'm not gay! I never was and I never will be. Humph!"

He slammed his money onto the counter and I swear the whole store was silenced for a moment.

Nolan moved up and looked at the little container the cashier had. He had a light smile that made everyone feel better.

Nolan: "I'll get one!"

He tucked his hair behind and ear and looked at the button pins
while I loaded our groceries.

Nolan: "Lou, get one! These are cute!"

While the cashier scanned everything I tried to find one I liked.

Nolan: "Wait, what are you even..?"

"Hm?"

Nolan: "Like, you never told me if you're bi or.. pan.."

"I'm not really sure to be honest."

The cashier was done soon and Nolan told me to take the rainbow one. He got the same so we were matching.

We finished our shopping and began to head home. I gave him the lightest bag while I carried the heavier ones, of course.

I couldn't help but wonder what Nolan wanted to tell me. He said it was a surprise so it has to be something good right?

Nolan: "So, what did you mean when you said that you don't know your sexuality?"

I shrugged.

"I never really used a label."
