A couple days later, we finally had the chance to meet Doctor Allen.

Nolan: "Is Lachlan okay?"

"He's with Moxy. He's fine."

Nolan: "Okay.. um, doctor? Can we get you tea or anything?"

Doctor: "Please, call me Allen. And thank you for offering. Do you have coffee?"

Nolan: "Um.."

"I'll get it."

Nolan and Allen stayed at the table while I went over to the kitchen to get a cup and whatnot.

Nolan: "Well, thank you for accepting to help me.."

Allen: "Oh, but of course! I'm actually a big fan of yours. I was so excited when I learned that you wanted me for your doctor."

Nolan: "Really? Thank you."

Allen was a tall man with dark hair and blue eyes. Although they looked green sometimes in certain lighting. He had a confident posture and was a man who spoke with an accent and lively hands. He wore a grey uniform that a nurse would wear that matched his round glasses. He had fair skin like Nolan and similar nose too.

Allen: Where are you from, may I ask?

Nolan: "I'm kind of mixed.. I'm Italian Jewish Canadian."

Allen: "I knew it. I knew you were Italian, too. I could see it!"

Nolan: "You're Italian?"

Allen: "Sí. Con orgoglio!"

Nolan: "Aw, cool! But I don't know any Italian.. Can you teach me?"

Nolan's eyes seemed to light up and they shared a laugh. I smiled to myself as I poured the coffee. It was always amazing to see Nolan connecting with people even just minutes after meeting them. He made friends a lot easier than I ever could.

I brought the coffee over and Allen thanked me politely before sipping almost immediately.
This wasn't the usual procedure people did when meeting their doctor. But it was my idea to see if he was someone Nolan could get along with. If he was safe and trustworthy. I had to be sure, since they might have to be alone together sometimes.

Nolan: "So Allen, do you have a lot of patients or..?"

Allen: "I have 2 others at the moment. But I have had many over the 8 years that I've been here."

Nolan: "Oh cool, you're almost my age. I'm 9."

Allen: "Oh, look at that. We have somethings in common already. We will be great friends, you and I."

Eventually, we went upstairs to our room so Allen could show us a few things. I carried Nolan in my arms like usual, but apparently the doctor didn't think it was safe. He started suggesting stair lifts instead. Which was fine, except for the fact that he was trying to take away my privilege of carrying Nolan around.

Nolan: "Lou? You okay?"

"Hm?"

He whispered softly so noone else could hear.

Nolan: "You look mad."

"Oh.. sorry. I'm not mad. Don't worry."

I set him gently on the bed and tried to adjust my face to look calmer. I guess I'd caught onto how overly friendly and attentive he was towards Nolan. And I didn't really like it. But I told myself that it was probably because he was his patient.

Allen: "You have a wonderful home, by the way."

Nolan: "Thank you! Thanks to Lou, it's clean all the time.."
