One of the hooded men had a gun to Nolan's head.
The rest of us froze.
No one could move.
Nolan: "Please don't..."
The hooded man had 2 others behind him. It would be stupid to try and get Nolan. We'd both just end up dead. And it's not like my body was responding anyways. I was completely frozen.
The brunette raised his hands to show that he had nothing to defend himself with. He turned around slowly and faced the Hooded Man. The gun was in his face now.
Hooded Man: Walk. Slow.
They walked backwards and Nolan followed them with tears in his eyes. They weren't stupid. They knew that the police would see them from there.
Mandy: "I can't see him anymore.."
Lachlan: "Daddy..."
Mandy: "No, no shh. It's okay. Shh."
Nolan and the Hooded Man finally stopped walking. The only one who could see them now was me. Not even the police.
Nolan stood in a spot so that the shooters had their backs turned to us.
Nolan: "Why are you doing this? Why are you hurting people?"
His voice was soft. Like how someone would talk to a child.
The men talked to one another in their language while someone next to Mandy stood up.
Mandy: "Hey. Sit down."
The stranger began to yell about how they're gonna kill us all. He had on a shirt with a flag of baby blues and white. He hyperventilated and in a state of panic, he ran past me, and out into the open. In the direction of the police.
Nolan: "No, don't-!"
POP!
The man fell to the ground, lifeless. Blood leaked from his head like how lava would run down a volcano. It was silent again and a shiver ran up my spine.
One of the Hooded Men cheered and seemed to be impressed or something. It was sickening.
Nolan: "W-Why did you do that? Why?"
Hooded Man: Shut up! He was a sinner. A demon.
Nolan: "Demon..?"
Hooded Man: "All you people are demons. And you're the worst one."
He cocked the gun and pointed it to Nolan's forehead. My heart was pounding but my feet still refused to move. Lachlan began to sob harder. He crawled into my lap and tried to see Nolan, too. I wondered at first how the kid knew what was happening. But it occurred to me that if he's watched things like Spiderman, then he probably knew what a gun looked like. And what it was capable of.
"Shh. It'll be okay."
I whispered, hoping he'd stay quiet if he was in my arms. I didn't know it at the time, but I shouldn't have let Lachlan watch. It would've been better to give him back to Mandy instead.
Nolan: "You're scared. Is that it? It's okay to be scared. I get scared, too.. but you can't kill people. It's wrong."
One of the other shooters sighed in annoyance and said to just shoot him already.
Nolan: "Look, the police are already here and surrounding us. You can either kill me or I can help you. I'm the mayor. I can help you. Did you know that?"
The other men looked at each other.
Nolan: "You've already hurt so many. I can't keep you out of prison, but I can talk to people. I can lower your sentence. But not if you keep hurting people. Please. Stop the shooting and I can help you. How many of you are there? What are your names?"
Suddenly, from my view I could see officers with shields and guns surrounding where Nolan and the shooters were.
Oddly enough, the masked men seemed to be distracted and thinking about Nolan's offer.
Suddenly, there was a loud voice from one of the officers.
Officers: "This is the police. Put down your weapons and surrender!"
The 3 men seemed to panic for a second as multiple people in uniforms appeared.
Nolan: "Put the guns down. It's okay.. No more shooting, okay? "
I sighed in relief. Nolan really was amazing. We all could breath again as the Hooded Men all held their guns down to their leg.
Nolan: "Okay..put them on the ground. It's okay.."
The one closest to him suddenly grunted angrily and stomped his foot to the ground. He yelled something I couldn't understand.
In an instant, Nolan had a gun to his head once again. He gasped and stepped back, with great fear in his eyes.
Lachlan suddenly escaped my grasp and peered out from behind the safety of the wall.
He cried loudly for Nolan and immediately drew the attention of the main shooter.
The gun in the distance was now pointed at the kid. Nolans eyes darted between the gun and his only child. I guess it only took him a split second to realize what could happen.
I grabbed the kid and covered his head with my hand while Nolan seemed to struggle with the shooter.
POP! Crackle!
I flinched and suddenly felt a stinging in my left arm. Mandy grabbed Lachlan and held him while he cried more and tried to get away.
I forgot about my arm for a minute and stood up to watch Nolan.
A couple officers appeared and guided Mandy and the others somewhere else.
Officer: "Sir, we need everyone over there."
I didn't know if they were talking to me or not. All I could focus on was Nolan being pushed to the ground. And shot. In the back.
POP!
The police finally got a hold of the hooded men and confiscated their weapons. My stupid tears blurred my vision. So I ran to him and fell to my knees.
"Nolan? Nolan?"
He cried out while I held him close to me. I think the pain was too much. He couldn't say anything.
"Nolan... I got you. You'll be okay. You're okay."
He finally looked into my eyes and started to cry harder. He held onto my shirt like his life depended on it. Maybe it did.
"He's hurt.. Please someone..!"
I looked around but the officers were too busy capturing and restraining the masked men. I looked down at my beloved and told him he would be okay.
He suddenly stopped crying and breathed a bit slower. My pants began to feel wet and red from his wound. He looked at my shirt instead and got really quiet.
"Don't leave me.. Don't you dare leave me. Nolan! Don't die!"
He zoned out for a second while the police finally finushed cuffing and restraining all of the shooters.
"Nolan.. Don't leave me!.. I need you. Nolan!"
I looked up and finally saw a couple paramedics running towards us.
"Look.. They're coming to help you. You'll be okay. Nolan-"
His hand suddenly let go of my shirt and fell to his chest, lifeless and limp.
"No, no.. don't..."
My tears fell onto his hair. And his eyelids began to close.
"Nolan..?"
The medics knelt down in front of me and laid him onto the ground gently. They said something, but I couldn't understand what it was. My heart was hurting too loud. I stood up and looked for any reaction from him. But there was none.
It got harder to breath and there was a rush all throughout my body.
I finally touched my left arm and felt a sharp pain. When I checked my hand, there was blood.
And then there was darkness.
