Nolan: "Can he stay? He's my fiancé."

Doctor: "That should be fine."

A doctor had made it to the room before David was able to. It was just Nolan and I.

She had a clipboard with her and a pamphlet.

I sat in a chair next to Nolan's bed and held his hand.

Doctor: "As you know, Nolan had to get surgery to remove the bullet. We were successful and he should recover fine from that. However, the bullet did cause damage to your spine. Because of that, the nerves to your legs have been impaired. That is why you are not able to move your legs now."

Nolan: "Oh.. so how long until I can walk again?"

She looked down at a page with a saddened look.

Doctor: "Unfortunately.. the spinal cord is a very sensitive part of the body. The neurological damage to the nerves in your limbs is.. permanent... It's very unlikely you'll be able to walk again."

Nolan looked down at his feet and concentrated. I think he was trying to move them.

"How unlikely?"

Doctor: "If you want a number, I'd say there's a 1% chance of recovery with constant physiotherapy. Although I wouldn't get your hopes too high. Medically speaking, it's a miracle he's even alive right now."

Nolan: "I'll never walk again...?"

Doctor: "No. I'm sorry."

I held his hand tighter and rubbed my thumb against it.

She began to explain that Nolan's state was called "paraplegia". She gave us a couple pamphlets and recommendations for physiotherapists. Nolan seemed to zone out during the whole thing.

Doctor: "In his profile, it said that he was also with child. So, we thought we would do a quick check before the surgery and.. It appears you've had a miscarriage due to the stress your body was put under during the attack. I'm sorry."

Nolans chin dropped down to his chest and he covered his face with his hands. He sniffled and whimpered like he was holding back a cry.

Doctor: "That's everything. You're welcome to go home after another hour has passed. If you need anything else, press the blue button here, on the wall and a nurse will come to check up on you."

I thanked her and she finally left.

"Nolan..?"

He kept his head down and began to sob.

"Bunny... I'm so sorry."

I hugged him and held him tightly. I felt him hug me back and cry onto my shoulder. He tried to say something but I couldn't make it out past the tears and the cries.

"It's okay. I got you. It's okay."

That's all I could think to say. My heart has never ached that much before for anyone. Nolan was one of the kindest people in the world, but it seemed like the universe didn't appreciate that.

Nolan: "Lou.. whm-nm.."

He sobbed into my shoulder something I couldn't understand.

"Shh. It's okay. Let it out first. It's okay."

I let him cry on me for almost 10 minutes. That's how long he needed.
When he had cried all of his tears, I sat on the bed with him and told him to lie down.
I wiped his face and kissed his forehead gently. I didn't know what else to say so we just looked at each other for a bit.

Nolan: "Lou..?"

"Yeah?"

Nolan: "I wanna see Lachlan.. Please."
