Gu Siyu was afraid of causing another awkward situation like yesterday's standoff with the four of them. She got up very early, when it was still dark outside, and there were few people on the road. There was a thin layer of mist in the morning, making everything around her hazy and indistinct.
Huo Junxian drove over, carrying a bunch of white roses. Gu Siyu's bag was placed on the seat, looking fuller than when she carried it herself last time.
Gu Siyu sat opposite her in the car. Even though a night had passed, she hadn't fully recovered from yesterday's ordeal, her face still showing signs of discomfort.
Her face was not very plump, and Huo Junxian's pinch was quite painful.
"What's wrong?" Huo Junxian noticed that she had been staring at her all this time, and touched her face, "Is something there?"
"Nothing." Gu Siyu withdrew her gaze and asked, "I wonder if the fog will clear up by the time we get there."
"It should clear up around eleven." Huo Junxian handed her a paper bag, "Breakfast."
Gu Siyu opened it and found buns and porridge, with bread and fried eggs underneath. Gu Siyu and her shared the breakfast, keeping it simple in the morning.
When they arrived, the fog was still thick at the place, and there were not many people in the cemetery.
Without waiting for Ye Qinghe and the others, Gu Siyu took Huo Junxian up first. She squatted in front of the tombstone and took out boxes of candies from her backpack—cute pig marshmallows, White Rabbit milk candies, and chocolate candies.
After placing them, she stood there for two to three minutes, hands in her coat pockets, ready to leave.
Huo Junxian pressed down on her shoulder. "Aren't you going to talk?"
"About what?" Gu Siyu looked puzzled.
Huo Junxian looked at her, her hand reaching up to her head, gently massaging. "It's been so long since we last met. There must be a lot you want to say."
Gu Siyu glanced at the tombstone. This was her first time coming to pay respects to someone. In the first twenty years of her life, she had lived like a lost soul, without relatives or friends.
She looked back at the tombstone.
There were no photos on the tombstone, just two simple lines.
Duan Xiqian, born at some time, passed away at some time.
Looking at it, Gu Siyu couldn't help but tilt her head slightly, finding it hard to continue. She moved her lips, "I'm doing well, grown up..."
Her voice choked involuntarily, and she took a deep breath.
"Some things can't be said out loud, just keep them in your heart," Huo Junxian said softly, understanding deeply. "If we don't talk now, going back will only make it harder to bear, because of thinking about someone in particular."
Gu Siyu placed her backpack on the ground and sat down beside it, pondering slowly.
Only now did Gu Siyu understand that compared to Duan Xiqian, she was fortunate. Although she had endured many years of hardship after Duan Xiqian's death, at this moment, she felt lucky.
Gu Siyu bit her lip.
It had been too long; she had long forgotten what Duan Xiqian looked like. She only remembered that Duan Xiqian was tall, wore her school uniform neatly, tied up in a high ponytail, with a student ID badge pinned to her chest. There were times when she forgot to bring it to school, always rushing home because she dared not enter when her father was home—Gu Siyu sneaked in to help her fetch it.
