12 hours on the plane.
As her feet touched the ground, Gu Siyu felt an unreal sensation, perhaps from sitting so long on the plane. The city seemed to be turning upside down, and it felt as if she was stepping onto a cloud rather than the ground. She was drifting, her hand resting on the handle of her suitcase to steady herself.
Her eyes hadn't adjusted to the change in scenery between the two countries. Everything around her felt unfamiliar. Gu Siyu took her time, pausing to carefully observe the once-familiar city and commit the scenery to memory. Slowly, the inverted cityscape began to return to normal.
Looking down at her phone, Gu Siyu noticed that Huo Junxian hadn’t sent many messages, probably thinking she was asleep. Sometimes, Huo Junxian could be quite naive.
Gu Siyu first checked into a hotel, dragging her suitcase inside. After taking a shower, she lay down on the bed and checked her messages. Huo Junxian had sent her several photos of meals: pickled mandarin fish, roast pigeon, and some raw marinated crabs.
Gu Siyu: [I’m getting hungry just looking at these.]
Moments later, Gu Siyu received a transfer notification.
[Huo Junxian has transferred 30,000 to you. Please check.]
Gu Siyu clicked to accept: [Thank you. I’ll go eat now.]
Huo Junxian: [Remember to send me pictures.]
Gu Siyu replied with an affirmative.
Unable to sleep, she got up and ordered food from an app. She found the restaurant where Huo Junxian had dined, but the delivery would only be available the next day. She switched to another restaurant and chatted with Huo Junxian while waiting for the food.
The hotel she was staying in had a nice environment. From the floor-to-ceiling windows, she could see the city lights and neon signs shining brightly like stars.
Huo Junxian, do you know how close I am to you right now?
The dishes she ordered arrived within an hour and a half.
Gu Siyu placed them in front of the window and took photos to send to Huo Junxian.
Huo Junxian: [Did you order from a Chinese restaurant?]
Gu Siyu: [Huh?]
Huo Junxian: [The packaging is in Chinese.]
Gu Siyu almost exposed herself but quickly played dumb: [Of course, mainly because foreigners don’t make these dishes, so I had to go to a Chinese restaurant. I’m not sure if it’s authentic; it took a while to gather everything.]
Huo Junxian: [Try it out. The place I ate at was just average, but the ingredients were fresh. I won’t be going to that restaurant again.]
Gu Siyu: [Don’t go there next time.]
Huo Junxian had attended a partner’s gathering, someone who had been a friend of her father’s. She had received an invitation and, as a junior, needed to make an appearance. She had brought gifts and left early in the morning.
Gu Siyu couldn’t compare the taste since she only had her own food to go by. She commented: [The food here is pretty good. If we get the chance, I’ll take you there.]
Huo Junxian: [Okay.]
With a smiley face at the end.
Having ordered a table full of dishes, Gu Siyu couldn’t finish them all by herself. She had a bit of everything, chatted for a while, and told Huo Junxian that she needed to go to school to get her grades and would talk later.
