After finishing her hair.
Gu Siyu knew she had to ask: [What are you going back for?]
Huo Junxian replied instantly: [My father's death anniversary is coming up, and I haven't visited him this year. I was busy during Qingming Festival and couldn't be home.]
She went to find Gu Siyu during Qingming Festival and didn't manage to rush back.
Gu Siyu's fingers scrolled on the keyboard, typing out words but hesitating to send them. After a few minutes of indecision, she gritted her teeth and sent: [Are you still coming over to hang out?]
Huo Junxian replied: [It depends on the situation.]
Gu Siyu didn't reply further. Her chest heaved violently, and she leaned on the sink, hitting it twice with force, almost shattering the mirror on top.
She felt the pain.
Her fingers tingled, and when she lifted them, she saw they were red.
About half an hour later, she went from the second floor to the first floor, and received another message. Huo Junxian asked if she wanted to come over for dinner.
Gu Siyu typed a reply, ready to say [I'll come over later], but paused just before sending. She went to the fridge, found some leftovers from yesterday that she hadn't finished, heated them in the kitchen, and placed them on the table before replying: [No need, I've already eaten almost everything.]
The dishes were made by Huo Junxian, but the leftover food tasted awful, possibly due to her bad mood, and Gu Siyu had no appetite at all.
Huo Junxian: [Okay.]
Feeling miserable inside, Gu Siyu cleared the dishes from the table. Unsure of what to do next, she wandered aimlessly in the yard.
After half an hour of wandering, she went back inside to check her messages. Huo Junxian hadn't sent anything else. Gu Siyu couldn't sit still, typing while seated on the sofa. She wrote and deleted several messages, unable to find a suitable topic.
Gu Siyu: [The weather is nice today.]
No reply came from the other side.
Gu Siyu stared at the screen, fidgeting with the sofa cushion, feeling restless. She didn't know what to do next, feeling emotionally low.
Subjectively, she felt she shouldn't be too upset. Huo Junxian was just going back to pay respects to her father; perhaps she would come back.
Gradually, she began to realize her mistakes.
Reflecting on her own departure, Gu Siyu wondered if Huo Junxian had experienced this unbearable feeling back then, like a slow-acting poison invading the body—painful, yet unable to find its source. Even trying to persuade her to stay felt futile.
Her rationality kept reminding her that it was a special circumstance back then, because Huo Junxian had restrained and even confined her, making her fearful and suffering, which forced her to leave.
She had to be a bit selfish and suppress her emotions.
But despite thinking it through, Gu Siyu had only one thought: she really didn't want Huo Junxian to leave.
They had been communicating via phones, their chats dry and awkward. They both knew they couldn't sustain the conversation now, yet they still continued.
Gu Siyu drifted through the day aimlessly. By three o'clock in the afternoon, she felt hungry. Coming out of the villa, she passed by the tea shop.
The owner was talking to a man with a big beard next door, while her husband sat at the door doing carpentry work. The owner casually said, "Why do you look so lost and unhappy? Where's your girlfriend? Weren't you two quite close before?"
