In the afternoon, the weather worsened. The wind picked up on the streets, and even though Gu Siyu was dressed warmly, she still felt the cold.

Her fingers were numb, and she kept checking her messages. She knew clearly that she wouldn't receive any messages from Huo Junxian for the next 12 hours, but with nowhere else to look, she couldn't help but keep checking her phone, scrolling through old chat records.

She couldn’t find anything to do and was very bored. Her mind was filled with fragmented thoughts, like memories and lantern slides.

Hiss.

Lantern slides were something you could only see before dying.

Gu Siyu held her scarf to her face. The coolness had long since faded, leaving only her own warmth, but she could still smell the faint, sweet milk scent from it.

When she got up and reached for something nearby, she realized she was still holding Huo Junxian’s bag. She hurried inside, worried there might be something important. When she reached the airport and saw the time on the screen, she realized the flight had taken off 2 hours earlier.

Oh, Huo Junxian was already gone.

Where could she be flying to now?

Gu Siyu slowly walked back, the cold wind on her face. She opened the bag and found a box tied with a ribbon inside, with a sticky note on it that read, “A gift for you.”

Gu Siyu picked up the box, which contained a card.

Huo Junxian: [I always wanted to give you something. There were many reasons, like making up for the birthday gifts I missed over the past two years or celebrating other holidays. While packing the gift today, I realized that apart from my father's death anniversary, there haven’t been any other significant holidays recently. I really couldn’t find a suitable reason to give it to you. Over the past two years, I often thought about the things you left behind when you left. They all involved roses, but I couldn’t figure out what you like.”]

Her handwriting, gentle and careful, ended with a cute little drum drawing.

Gu Siyu unwrapped the large box to find several smaller boxes inside.

There was an expensive watch, apparently a Patek Philippe, and a toy drum that resembled those popular online blind box crafts. Given the delicate craftsmanship, it was likely made by Huo Junxian herself.

Further down was a photo frame. Gu Siyu carefully peeled off the white paper and saw a painting of herself.

She was standing outside the door, holding an apple and looking inside.

The perspective was from inside looking out, as if someone was standing inside watching her. Her hand, holding the entire red apple, looked delicate and required effort to grip. The highlights on her knuckles were subtly drawn.

She wasn’t standing very straight, tilting her head to look inside, with a casual glance that showed lingering interest and curiosity about the person inside.

The eyes were illuminated, with shadows in the pupils. Although the eyes looked small on the limited canvas, she couldn’t see them very clearly.

Gu Siyu really liked the painting.

She guessed it was from when she first entered Huo Junxian’s house, when she saw Huo Junxian hadn’t eaten and went over to please her, foolishly offering her an apple.

Back then, she didn’t know the person living behind that door was a demon.

Through this painting, Gu Siyu could also sense Huo Junxian’s state at that time. Despite her efforts to tempt Huo Junxian with the apple, Huo Junxian’s gaze remained fixed on her face.
