The most defining moments of your life will always be the ones you can't control.

Fear, risk, Danger. Those are the defining things that every human being will avoid and that's precisely when we come across those moments that we feel all of the conflicting emotions.

These events can either be positive or negative towards your path.

Yaeko learned the true meaning of fear when she was way too young to even comprehend it properly. It all started with a mistake by her father, who could have never predicted just how much trouble his betting could get him.

The problem is that when you're doing it with borrowed money, it's very easy to lose track.

And well, the thing that ended up being his demise wasn't just the betting but also who he borrowed the money from.

Yakuza.

Years and years of domination over so much Japanese money and power might have been losing the effects but there was no denying that their power was still scary enough for most.

The list of Yakuza activities was long but the most important thing was how ruthless they were when it came to business.

Yes, because you couldn't simply choose not to obey them. It was either that or death.

One thing was certain, the group didn't play.

Even with their declining popularity and number of members lower than ever before, the organization still had more than enough power.

So much of Japan's economy still lingered in their hands and there was no denying that they still controlled a lot of things that most people couldn't even begin to expect.

The Yakuza had their hands in everything, drugs, and crime being the most obvious. Still, their influence was evident in the media and politics. A lot of what happened in the country was still very dependent on them and when in business with these people, you always had to be careful.

Well, that was precisely the biggest mistake of Yaeko's father.

After borrowing money from these ruthless people, you are certainly expected to pay on time.

The thing about the Yakuza was that they couldn't care less about anyone's feelings. They can easily decide to just fix the problem and not blink in the process.

When it came to handling the consequences, Yaeko's father reacted in a way that no parent should. He took the very first opportunity and went along with it, no matter the consequences.

The then 18-year-old woman was completely clueless about what was about to happen in her life.

Because all of those dreams and hopes that she always had for the future would soon be completely gone without a single chance to fulfill them.

For some kind of reason, her father quickly decided that the most obvious solution was offering her in exchange for the money that he owed. At the time, the younger version of herself couldn't even begin to understand how he could possibly even consider something like that but as she grew, Yaeko understood that he did it to survive.

Understanding it, however, didn't make her hate him any less.

Now 10 years later she was married to the second in line of one of the biggest branches of the organization and all of her life ever since was completely tied to the man she married. One who was already around 60 years old when they married.

A famous and influential name in the "family", her husband rose to the ranks way too quickly and that made it so she did as well.

For most of the women in the Yakuza, responsibilities were scarce and limited to what most wives would do for their husbands in any normal circumstances but for Yaeko, the responsibilities were far different.

Being so much at the top meant that she was involved in most of the ins and outs of this family and as a general rule, it meant that she knew most of what happened.

As good as it was to feel powerful every once in a while, the sheer sacrifice of everything she had once dreamed was never once made up for that fact. If anything, Yae felt dirty on most occasions, fully aware of her impact on the crimes that she often saw committed.

Those 10 years had, without a single doubt, changed her into a completely different person, and all of the hopes of being able to go back to what her life used to be were now completely gone.

By now, she had accepted that her life was stuck with this man and everything that came with it. Now it was more of a question of how long it would last.

Even in the possible event of her husband's death, nothing could ever reassure her that they would allow her to leave that place. So what were her real hopes for any changes?

That was just the thing, she didn't have any.

But like everything in life, you can't always guess what will happen and you certainly can't take a single thing for granted.

The real question was if she would survive the journey.
