The poor agent had no idea what she was about to tell him but the concern was evident.
"Are you in danger? My agents reported a few minutes ago and said everything was fine."
Well, the agents couldn't predict the panicking state going inside that building.
"I'm safe, but we do have to talk about something."
"What's going on?"
"Before I tell you, I know this is bad and how much it puts me at stake, but I never thought of it as a possibility and I..."
"Yaeko, just tell me."
"I'm...I'm pregnant."
Silence.
The silence was all she heard for a good few minutes as the agent, undoubtedly, tried to process the information she was providing.
It seemed like forever until she finally heard his voice again.
"Who?"
"What do you mean who? You know exactly who."
"Shit"
Yaeko managed to giggle at that, even if the whole thing wasn't exactly funny, she didn't have much more of an option besides taking things lightly.
"I knew that allowing you both to spend the night together was a mistake."
"But..."
"Yae, this is so dangerous... If they know..."
"They won't know. The trial is close, right?"
"Yes... But can you hide it? You're already a bit far along from my calculations."
Yeah, she hadn't thought much of that. Life had been going fast and it was easy to forget that between the arrests and her current situation, there were already 3 months in between.
So maybe when the trial actually happened, Yaeko would need to actively hide her situation but it still wasn't impossible.
"Well, it's all I can hope for. I'm going to need a doctor to be sure, but I'm probably far beyond the possibility of not having this child, even considering the possibility as something I was willing to go through."
"You know we are not going to ask you to do that, but I'm definitely glad that you didn't hide this from me. You know I always find out about things, right?"
She gulped, knowing exactly what the man meant.
"I made sure it was safe."
"No, that was my responsibility. I was the one who had to find agents to follow you to a certain arena and make sure everything was ok. It was risky, wYaeko, and you know as much."
"Yeah"
It was naive of her to think that it would be possible to go by unnoticed by the agents who watched her. Of course, they knew she had been to the show and even though she shouldn't do that, agent Miura still found a way to make sure she was safe.
That's exactly how you know that you're in safe hands.
"I'm not going to lecture you on this. I know it's hard to be apart and I know you're fully aware of danger after so many years living under that roof, but for future reference, I would like to know these plans a bit more in advance."
"Would you even let me go?"
"I'm sure you could be convincing enough."
In a way, he was giving her the perfect opportunity for what came next. Yaeko knew very well what she wanted.
"That reminds me..."
"Oh no" he joked, already predicting her next words.
"I just... I have to tell him, you understand, right?"
On the other side of the line, an audible sigh was heard. Yaeko knew he didn't like this a single bit but she was starting to feel like the agent had a soft spot for her. Obviously not in a romantic way, more like a father-daughter relationship.
"Let me see what I can do."
"I could use this phone... I know his number."
He didn't seem to want to cave but Yaeko knew she had won just from his tone alone.
"Alright. But if you ever decide to see him in person, I will have to know. On our side, I will try to rush things a bit."
"I'm very grateful and thankful for everything you've done for me."
"Just promise me you'll raise that child better than those monsters. We need good people in this world."
"I wouldn't have it any other way."
"Alright. Stay in touch."
They said their goodbyes fast. She couldn't wait to make the other call.
Yet, as her fingers glanced at the screen of her phone, Yaeko started overthinking everything.
During all of the chaotic hours between finding out about being pregnant to calling the agent, she hadn't once considered the possibility that the skater might not be excited with the news.
Hell, this was something serious. It was a whole child and he was not only incredibly busy but also, his job required him to be in the public's eye.
There was certainly a possibility that he didn't want children, especially with a woman who wasn't even divorced yet.
Still, no matter how many uncertainties lingered, Yae knew that he had the right to know, no matter what the outcome would be.
So after quite a few moments of nerves and hesitation, she finally dialed the number that was engraved in both her heart and mind.
Hearing it ring time and time again did nothing good for her nervous stance but then again, Yuzuru didn't know her number, it wasn't that surprising that he didn't take the call right away.
With no answer, she tried again and it seemed like the insistance worked in getting him curious enough to answer.
"Hello?"
She heard his sweet voice utter, only reminding her of how much she missed him.
"Hey" she said softly, not even introducing herself or saying much more.
Well, one thing was certain, they were both equally lost in feelings because he knew it was her from the voice alone.
"Yaeko?"
"Hey, Yuzu. Are you well?"
"I... I didn't expect a call from you."
"I know... But there's something we have to talk about."
"Is there? Are you okay?"
The worry in his voice was evident and for some kind of reason, it made her smile.
"I'm okay but I have some news that I don't know how to tell you."
"Whatever it is, you know I can handle it."
Throwing all the caution down the wind, Yaeko just uttered the dreaded words.
"I'm pregnant."
