The next morning, the sea is calm and the sky is a clear blue as Amaya, Naruto and Sakura go to perch on the ship steps. Lee, Hiro, Kai, Kakashi and I stand next to them as we wait for Hikaru and his father to join us. Chamu and Kiki are out on the deck too.
When Michiru appears, he steps aside to reveal his son. Kiki bounds over to Hikaru and jumps into his arms. Hikaru laughs joyously as the monkey squeaks happily, waving his arms around.
Hikaru's laughter is cut off as Chamu gets up and approaches him. Michiru jumps away, startled.
The showman gasps warningly, "Hey! Watch out, Sonny! Get back!"
We all watch as Chamu slowly steps around Hikaru before stopping in front of him. Hikaru leans back out of fright and we tense up. Hikaru glances down at Kiki who squeaks and makes a pawing motion with his paw, as though to tell Hikaru he can pat his friend.
Hikaru slowly approaches Chamu and holds out his hand. Chamu closes his eyes and allows the boy to pat him. A wide smile stretches across Hikaru's lips. He laughs softly as Chamu plops down at his feet, stunning everyone else. Kiki jumps happily up and down on Chamu's back.
The showman says in amazement, "Amazing! I've never seen Chamu do that with anyone before!"
Sakura nudges Naruto's shoulder pointedly as she says, smiling, "Go on!"
Naruto rubs the back of his head but he gets to his feet and steps over to Hikaru, who is patting Chamu as he sprawls on the deck in content.
Naruto stops in front of Hikaru, and the boy looks up at him wearily. Naruto begins, scratching his right cheek, "H-Hey... I just wanted to say... aaahhh!" Naruto grunts at my and Sakura's pointed looks before he bows. "I'm sorry! I shouldn't have whacked you, and I shouldn't have said those things, so, I'm sorry!"
Naruto says as he straightens up, rubbing under his nose, "Man, you were great! Maybe a little reckless, but you sure get points for guts!" Naruto lets out a giggle as he crouches, glancing at Chamu and Kiki. "And I'm not the only one who knows how brave you were—they know it too."
Chamu purrs as Naruto giggles.
Hikaru says as he wipes the tears from his eyes and turns to bow to the blonde, "Same here. I'm sorry too! For everything I did and said." Hikaru turns back to the sabertooth tiger and crouches, gaze apologetic. "That goes for you, too. Sorry, Chamu!" He closes his eyes briefly in shame. "I got mad when you didn't trust me right away." Hikaru then hugs Chamu's face. "You see, all I ever wanted was for you and Naruto to be my friends! I've never been able to make friends... I don't know how..." A sniffle.
Naruto says in understanding, "Is that all you wanted? Why didn't you say so?" Hikaru turns to look at him, sniffling. "You wanna friend, you got one! From here on out, we're officially friends!"
Hikaru timidly asks, "You mean it?"
"Yeah!" Naruto beams at him.
A wide smile stretches across the boy's lips. Chamu purrs as he nudged Hikaru in the chest, causing him to fall backwards though Chamu catches Hikaru with a back foot. Kiki jumps up and down on Chamu's back excitedly.
Naruto says, "Now you've got three friends!"
Amaya says as she goes over with Sakura, Lee, Hiro and Kai, crouching behind Naruto, "Four friends!"
