I stared deeply into the galaxies that rested on his face. They were deep and old and echoing with both dying and thriving stars. They were enchanting and-
He snapped. He snapped in my face. Shook his head as if to tell me not to stare too long. But, then he reached to the side of his jaw and began to tear off his thick, golden mask.
"What's with this?" Elsie boldly spoke to him as if they were old friends but I saw the slight tremble of her fingertips. "The temple issued it to condemn me for my crimes," His voice was low and beautiful. He was beautiful. His Legend didn't describe him well enough, it didn't touch the surface on his beautifully crafted face and complexion. His alluring bone structure and large swirling eyes.
"With a mask, they assumed I couldn't use my mouth to deceive people." His mouth. My eyes darted to his lips, my cheeks burned for a moment when I thought he shot me a glance. But I couldn't tell. His eyes were two oasises of sparkles with not a single pupil or human aspect in sight.
"Yet, you're taking it off?" Elsie dared to speak again. He shrugged. "I don't listen to the temple. They couldn't kill me if they tried. But I quite like wearing it when I'm alone."
It was a strange thing to say. To want to wear a shackle on your face. But his story wasn't normal. His lips were plagued with deceit and yearned to speak lies. So, as weird as I found it, and as much as I couldn't possibly understand, it made sense for him to wish to silence his deceptive tongue. Even in brief passing.
"Don't be frightened." He was clearly looking at me now, having to turn his head down to face me. "I'm not." I countered. "Don't lie." He stated, "or have you forgotten who I am?"
He could sense lies. That was true. Though I didn't even know I was lying. But by the rate my heart pounded, it appeared to be true.
"What do you want from me?" I started again. "Aww, no thank you for waking me up?" He asked, brows furrowed and eyes just as entrancing as they'd always been.
"I'll thank you once I know why you saved me-"
"You're not crying." I slightly shook my head in confusion. It was such a sudden statement. And terribly out of place. "No, I've done enough of that."He lightly chuckled. "I thought you'd be wallowing in despair, but it appears your soul has completely shattered."
"That way you won't be able to take it." I instinctively said. "Oh, so you have heard the stories." He grinned a dazzling Cheshire grin."Well, are they wrong?"
"Of course not. But everyone does something for a reason."
"You're not everyone, you're the King of Deceit."
"That's such a broad term, just call me Leo."
I paused for a moment. "Have you named yourself after the constellations in your eyes?"He paused too, but it wasn't to think, it was just to bask in my expression. "Maybe....maybe not."
"Okay, Leo, tell me why you've saved me-"
"Save is a strong word. I simply woke you up."
"But, the curse-"
"You're still cursed," his smile remained, his hands were behind his back as he leaned to speak to me, "Surely you haven't forgotten that it clings to you for eternity. All I've done is opened your eyes.""But, how is that-"
"Oh, it's not a hard thing to wake you up. It's only a small condition of your curse-one that can easily be dismissed."I staggered slightly. "Then why wait one-hundred years?" He smiled all the more. "I hadn't known until now. Besides, I'm not all-knowing and I am rather busy with my own matters..." he trailed off, studied me. "What? Were you hoping someone else would wake you? Don't tell me you were waiting for someone-"
"I wasn't."He nodded slowly, pursed his lips. He knew it was a lie.
"Maybe you can only wake me because you're a Legend."
"She's not a legend." He said, gesturing to Elsie. "All I did was tell her what to do.""What exactly is she?" I was suddenly curious. Elsie shot me an 'I'm right here. Why did you ask him?' Look. "Oh she's just a tall tale from somewhere." He waved his hand dismissively and I could almost imagine his star coated eyes rolling.
"I am a beautiful story," she added with a smirk, "and I have done YOU a great service. You ought to owe me for-"
"I don't owe you anything." Leo cut in. "You owed me. And this favor was your price to pay." He inched closer. "Unless you'd like me to take a piece of that pretty, swirling soul anyway?" She gulped, turned away. "No, your highness."I was struck with fear. That was when it truly hit me that he was The King-The most dangerous legend. And he was to be obeyed, not bargained with.
"I will take my leave now." Elsie said, her wings beginning to flutter on her back. "Good." Leo spoke coldly before turning back to me.
"Oh, right," he said with a smirk, "You wanted to know why I summoned you."
I instantly tensed, my shoulders froze stiffly and my hands clenched at my sides. He laughed heartily as he stared at my scared expression. "Don't do that. It's nothing absurd."
I slowly nodded, my brows stitched together.
"I just need you to help me finish my story."
I practically choked. "Your story has no end, it's just a beginning. It's a tale of how you became a Legend."
"Don't speak to me as if I'm clueless." His voice was stern now. "And, you're wrong. There is an end to my story, there's an end to every Legend's story."
"What is it?" I asked but his jaw suddenly tensed. "That doesn't matter. You don't need to know in order to help me."
"I'd like to." I stated calmly. He chuckled once more, his hand raked through his blood-red hair. "Don't delude yourself into thinking you have a choice. You owe me." He brought his finger to my face and tilted my chin. "But don't be afraid," he said, "I always stay true to my deals."And that wasn't a lie. He was The King of Deceit but he always followed through. Something was always taken in the process though and I am assuming now that, in this scenario, it is my free will.
"How could I possibly help?" I flinched at my own daring tone. "You're enchanted." He spoke simply before turning around and looking at the endless, magically snowy hills. "Perhaps you should come inside. I know humans tend to get cold-"
"What do you mean I'm enchanted?" I inquired, my voice tense and panicked. He sighed for a brief moment. "I told you you're still cursed. And that curse grants you a special ability. You're the only person who can complete our stories."
"But, I'm cursed. This isn't some sort of gift-"
"Oh, but it is. You've been filled with so much torment-so much pain-that it has given you a level of understanding that no human could ever possess," he grinned, "you can understand our(I assume he meant the Legends') pain. You can comprehend constant torment for all of eternity.""I still fail to understand how this 'enchants' me."
"The curse follows you and constantly fills your heart with agony. I can see it now, though you do an excellent job at hiding it," he quirked his brow knowingly, "and its constant presence allows you to see." I tilted my head curiously. "You can see what even we Legends cannot and you can bring us to the end of our stories.""Why do you want to reach the end?" I asked stupidly. "Because the end means the end of our pain." He said it simply with a slight frown. But his expression held no deep sorrow at all. He was reciting what he knew and his emotions were missing somewhere a thousand years ago.
"What happens to me once I complete your stories?" He smiled again, it was calm and non-threatening. "You'll be free from the curse." He turned swiftly, assuming I'd follow him to his castle. And I did. But I still couldn't comprehend anything.
How could this curse help him? How come it ends the second I do? How was this curse created? And, most of all, who subjected me to it? Who buried me in sorrow for all these years?
"I still feel like I don't get much from this deal." I stated as I walked hesitantly behind him. He slight nodded back to me. "Well, what else besides freedom do you wish to gain?" And that was when my eyes finally welled. I finally let myself think of him.
"There's someone I wish to meet again."
