The Ambush

I laid on my back staring into the darkness of the room but couldn't seem to bring myself to sleep. I didn't know where Leo was but I was certain he hadn't left. "Leo?" I whispered.

"You don't need to be so quiet. It's just us in here." He spoke in a regular tone. "Right," I said, "just us..." I gulped and for a second I was glad it was so dark in there. That way he couldn't see my red face.

"Don't tell me you're nervous." He laughed and I shook my head, forgetting he couldn't see me. "Go to sleep, little queen. It's late." His chuckle died down into something more relaxed.

"I can't." I said, clutching the blanket covers as I spoke. "Leo?" I started again and heard him audibly sigh. "What is it, little queen?"

My eyes were wide open and searching the room for any sign of him, but it was black as night, almost as if I was staring directly into the sky around his castle. "Tell me about yourself."

"We're not friends. You don't need to know about me." I heard him shuffle and switch whatever position he was in. "Besides, I'm sure you've already assumed enough about me already."

I gulped and sucked in a breath. "That's true," I admitted, frowning at myself in the process. "But, I'd like to know what you're really like....like what your interests are."

"No." He quickly shot me down. "Fine. Then, I'll go first." I heard him mumble something like 'I don't care.' But he didn't speak loud enough for me to actually listen to him.

"Let's see," I started looking around once more in search of what to say, "My favorite food is raspberry scones, my favorite animals are rabbits, and my favorite person is..-"
"Charleon?" Leo surprisingly spoke and I almost jolted at the sound of his voice. "No, my brother, Dimitri." I smiled at the thought of him and allowed myself to reminisce for a moment. "But, I guess I can't really say that now." My eyes lowered as I thought of my dead brother. I was close to him-closer to him than I had ever been with anyone else.

"Queenie, can I ask you a question?" Leo's voice broke my silence. "What is it?" I looked in the direction where I assumed he sat. "Of all things....your favorite food is raspberry scones?" His tone was disgusted and laced with disbelief.

"Yeah, so what? They're good."
"Maybe..." I heard him playfully sigh, "But blueberry is better."
"Blueberry? No. You're insane."
"I thought you already knew that." He chuckled, but my cheeks rounded as a large smile formed. "You like blueberries?" I asked, my tone a little too chipper.

"I guess so." He replied bluntly, clearly trying to end the conversation.
"I just learned something about you." I stated triumphantly. "Tell me more." "No." He was quick to shoot me down. "Come on, I told you three whole things about myself."

"What? About how you like rabbits and scones? That's some vital information right there." His tone was dripping with sarcasm. I rolled my eyes in annoyance. "I can't tell you how grateful I am to you for sharing that. Really, I mean it. I'm gonna need that someday-"
"Can you cut the attitude for one second?" I practically yelled in aggravation.

"Not really." He replied and I huffed out a breath. "I'm going to sleep. You ruined it." And even though I wasn't remotely tired, I rolled over and forced my eyes shut.
Silence ensued for what felt like an eternity. It was to the point where I could hear each one of his slow breaths and even the sound of his lips finally parting.

"I like roses."
Leo's voice broke the silence. My eyes instantly flew open. "Roses..?" I asked, slightly turning myself in his direction. "Yeah, my mother..." He took a deep breath, "She used to paint them. Said they were her favorite flower."

I pursed my lips and stared forward, contemplating what to say next. "You don't...hate your mother?" I felt awful the second the words left my mouth.

"No," I heard his quiet, painful chuckle cutting through the dark, "Sometimes I wish I did. But, I don't."

For some reason, I felt tears form in my eyes. I wanted to say I would hate my mother if she killed me-I wanted to say it and I figured I would. But, maybe he was so deprived of love that he was clinging to what used to be-even now-thousands of years into his eternal life.

"There. I shared something. So, go to sleep." I heard him slightly shift once more. "And I mean for real this time. Don't just sit there all angry with your eyes closed."

"How did you know I-" I caught myself in embarrassment, realizing I had exposed my petty behavior. I bit my lip and shut my eyes, but then I saw a flash of something so bright I could sense it through my closed lids.

"Leo.." I sat up now as more trails of light popped up through the now visible woods. "I told you to-" "Leo!" I whipped around and saw him shoot up from the floor.

"Do you think that's...?" I trailed off before I could finish as I watched what appeared to be hundreds of men wielding torches approaching the inn. "Imperial soldiers." Leo stated in annoyance.

"Come on, little queen." He stepped beside me. "We have to go." I practically leapt off the bed and clutched onto his arm. "Stay by me." He commanded as he crept to the door and slowly opened it. We snuck out into the hallway, but at that exact moment, the entrance door burst open and armor-clad men poured in.

Leo instantly rushed me back into the room and slammed the door. "How did they find us?" I asked, but he just shook his head, rubbed his chin with his left hand. "Don't know. Could be Esmeralda-could not." I let out a shaky breath as we both scanned the dark room.

"Are you willing to jump out a window?" He asked and I almost smacked him in response. "No!" I yelled, the sound of heavy footsteps drew closer. "You're a Legend, can't you just float me down!"

"I'm not a wizard, y/n." He sighed and raked a hand through his hair. "Whatever. You don't get a choice anyway." He yanked me by my wrist and pulled me towards the glass. "Wait, wait, wait!" I yelled but he didn't stop.

"Don't tell me you're going to push me out?" I struggled against his grasp. I could scarcely make out his glare before he smashed the window with his elbow.

"Open this door! By order of the kingdom, you must obey!" A loud fist pounded against the wood.

Leo leaned himself out the window before dropping down. The wind blew against my face as I stared down at him through the broken glass. He extended his arms....He was going to...catch me? No, no, immediately no.

SLAM! SLAM!

I whipped my head around to the sound of someone's full body ramming against the door. "It's now or never, little queen." Leo called out from below.

I shut my eyes and took a deep breath before climbing up on the window. I slowly released my shaky hands from the walls and jumped just as the hinges on the doors popped apart. I didn't even have time to yelp before I landed in his arms.

"See, wasn't so scary." I opened my eyes to see him grinning. "Put me down." I scowled, but his glistening eyes darted to somewhere behind me. "No time." He said before spinning on his heel and running in the opposite direction. He held me tight in his arms and forced my head against his chest. I wrapped my hands around the back of his neck and squeezed my eyelids shut as cool, misty wind blew over them.

But, suddenly he set me down behind a thick oak tree. "Why are we-" My words were cut off my his hand sliding over my mouth. He held his index finger to his lips and leaned to look past the tree.

"Over here!" I heard a man yell and swords swishing and bows and arrows clicking. They wanted to kill me-that shook me to my core.

Their boots rushed by and I swore I saw Leo's shoulders relax when they passed.

Our eyes met finally and he slowly slid his hand from my mouth, nodding to me as he did so. But his hand moved from my lips to a stray hair in my face. He delicately swished it behind my ear, brushing my skin in the process. Without thinking much, I placed my shaking hand over his and grazed my fingers against the back of it before clutching his palm.

We sat like that for a moment before he finally broke his gaze away. "We should get to the carriage now." He said, pulling his hand from mine and brushing past me.

"Yeah.." I replied even though it was too quiet for him to hear me.
