The Escape

"I thought me being your bride meant no one would try to kill me!" I screeched as we ran the away from the town and through the woods.

"That's ordinary people, little queen. I told you how unreasonable the temple is." His voice was hushed and urgent. "Are they really that unreasonable? I can understand why they want you dead."

"But, they want you dead too. Can you understand that?"

I sighed. "Yes, but it's not like I wish for it to be true." Leo laughed at my words before yanking me behind a tree. "This is a terrible hiding spot." I cried. "I didn't say we were hiding here." He brought his fingers to his mouth and whistled.

His glistening carriage appeared almost instantly. The ghost-like horse shimmied anxiously in place. "Hurry up, little queen." He practically shoved me into the carriage. I heard tens of heavy, running footsteps rushing toward us as the door shut.

The carriage took off almost instantly and I had to brace myself against the back of the seat. I caught my breath and looked out the window at the guards gathering on the ground below us. "They...almost caught us." I gulped with worry.

Leo ran a smooth hand along the purple cushion on his seat, seemingly not listening to a single word I was saying. I turned to him and squinted for a moment, trying to understand a fraction of his expression.

But, I couldn't. He was calm but his eyes were raging, but they always were. "You still haven't told me what The Guild is."
"Never said I would." He shot back almost instantly. I frowned and stared all the more which made him crack a small smile. "But, I will." I imagine if he could roll his eyes he would since his stars glimmered in an annoyed fashion.

"The Guild," He practically forced himself to speak the words, waving his hand as if he hated the name. And it was a rather peculiar name since a guild, in general, is some form of organization, but the name is so unspecific. "They see themselves as heroes for the people. They're like the temple without the magic."

I tilted my head. It was no great information so why bother wanting to keep it from me? But, then I saw him grin a wide, curling grin. "But, looks like you'll get to see your boyfriend sooner than you thought."

And I froze. My mouth dropped open and my eyes glazed over and I was struck with disbelief. "Charleon...?" My voice was shrill and desperate. "Well, don't tell me you have more than one?" He joked but I couldn't hear him. I couldn't hear anything but Charleon's faint voice in my ears. As much as I will never admit it, it had began to fade and distort. I don't think I know his true tone of voice anymore.

"Where....where is The Guild?" My eyes were wandering Leo's face in search of a crack in expression. Just waiting anxiously for him to answer. "It's in the poor edges of the north." My heart dropped. Has Charlie been living terribly just waiting for me to return?

"And before you ask, yes he's a part of the organization. A rather large part." He mumbled the last sentence and switched his starlit sight to the window.

My hands were clenched on my knees and I fought to ground myself-to bring my head back to earth. But, I was drowning in a thousand oceans and flying through fields of hope. And, all the while, I couldn't breathe or move in fear that my hopeful feelings might run away.

"Don't look so anxious." I heard Leo say. I looked up to see him leaning against the window, his finger brushing over his lip. "It'll be a while before we get there."

I don't recall when it happened but I must've fallen asleep. And my dream was a void-a void of darkness and nothing. Unlike before, when I was forced into a slumber, I don't experience tragic lives behind my closed eyes anymore.

In my dreams now, I am utterly alone and bawling in the center of the pitch black nothingness. I can't bring myself to stand or call out to someone because the pain is too unbearable. In my ears I hear constant whispers.

Your fault. It's all your fault. They're dead and it's your fault. They rotted away thousands of times because of you. You wanted it to happen. You wanted them to die. Everything is your-

"My queen." The familiar voice was fresh around me. A hand touched the side of my face and I could scarcely see it through the darkness of the void I was rotting in. The hand was surprisingly gentle given its owner's cruel nature, and I was tempted to hold onto it for the rest of my-

"Ouch!" He suddenly flicked me harshly in the forehead. "Wake up. We're here." And when my eyes fully focused, he had already moved across the carriage and opened the door.

I took his hand and stepped out. Around me were crumbling buildings that formed a narrow alleyway. I saw people sprawling out on the street and huddling under newspapers. Trash flapped across the cracked brick road and dirt clustered into a cloud at my feet.

But, in front of me, the road extended to a large building. It was shining as if a fresh coat of wax was applied everyday. It was polished with refined edges and long, gothic windows. Statues of bowing saints were placed on either side of the tall, secure entrance door.

"Is this The Guild?" I asked, but Leo's only response was to pull me towards it with a grin. And, suddenly, I didn't feel so burdened about how Charli must've been living. But, I counts help but wonder how this all came to be. In my mortal life, I had never heard of anything like this.

We made it to the building's bordering gate and I noticed that Leo didn't slide his hood on. "Wait, they'll recognize you." Unknowingly my hand had reached dangerously close to his dark-red hair. I wanted to touch it, but I had to stop myself knowing that this was the effect Legends had on people.

Leo grinned and patted me on the top of the head. I slightly flinched at the action. "Don't worry about me, little queen. This isn't the temple. If they try to kill us...." He paused and met my eyes. His shined with something unknown but deeply concerning before laughing to himself. "I'd like to see them try." He muttered knocking at the gate.

I never thought I would see him knock-actually ask to get in somewhere. But then I noticed his impatient expression and working jaw. I assumed he rolled his eyes before pushing the gate open on his own volition.

And that was when the heavy entrance slowly rolled along its working gears and opened. Men rushed forward and I saw Leo raise his brow at me, completely unsurprised.

I could tell the men were scared as Leo continued to walk past the gate. They all unanimously came to a halt just before him, but he kept his stride, now grasping my hand and leading me with him.

Then, at that moment, one person sprinted through the crowd, without a single care about The Legend in front of him. I saw his blond hair flowing in the sunlight and his baby blue eyes welling with tears.

"Y/n!" He yelled and I almost broke free of Leo's grasp to run to him. "Charleon!" But Leo squeezed my hand harder. I jerked my arm and turned to him with pain in my eyes. He shook his head and gestured to the army of men. Each of them wielded a weapon and had it raised readily.

Charleen slowed to a halt just in front of them. His eyes darted to Leo's hand intertwined with mine-only for a second-but I saw the hurt flash in his gaze. "Drop your weapons." He commanded.

"My wife is here."
