"You can stay here," Charleon opened a door to a small room in the upstairs hall, "I would say you could stay with me but I don't know if you would...uhh..." He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "Thank you." I turned to him and smiled, "I mean it."
"Of course," He said, his eyes landing on my bare ring finger, "Y/n..." He stepped forward and held both of my hands, "Maybe we can take a trip to the south and..." He traced a circle where a ring would be, "Finally say our vows." He squeezed my hand as he spoke, but it only made my heart race anxiously.
I forced my eyes shut and took a deep breath before speaking. "Charli, I need to tell you-"
"BOSS!" A loud voice called from downstairs. Charli whipped his head around and dropped my hands. "I'm so sorry, darling, but I need to be going now." He turned and rushed out of the room, blowing me a kiss in the process.I plopped down on the bed and cradled my head in my hands. I needed to tell him. I had to. But, I felt so awful and ashamed about it. It was all so embarrassing to say and terrible at the same time.
I fell back and set my sights on the ceiling. I raised my arms and intertwined them in front of my face, imagining that they were resting on the back of someone's neck. I wondered if that someone had set out to dig up the final book yet.
My heart sank at the thought and I instantly rolled over and shook it away. He doesn't care for me. Who am I to try and help him? I'm no one at all.
I decided to get up and not just confine myself to the one room. Maybe Charli was on a mission around town, caring for the people. Maybe I could help, or maybe I could explore the large estate.
I made my way to the door, but I startled when I saw that it was locked. I yanked and twisted the handle, but the door didn't budge. "Hey!" I yelled, banging on the surface with my fist. "Hello? I think you've locked me in!" I called out, but I didn't hear so much as a shuffle in the outside hall.
I furrowed my brow and set my sights to the window at the other end of the room. The building was high, but I've jumped from a high window before.
But, I had arms to catch me then....Now, I do not.
But, just as I weighed my very dangerous options, the door swung open and Charli was before me. "Y/n! What's wrong?" He asked, examining my figure.
"Why did you lock the door?" I asked frantically, yet filled with accusation. "No, don't misunderstand." He said in an easing tone. "I'm just worried someone might try to hurt you."
I was about to challenge his statement, but then I remembered that I did, in fact, carry a deadly curse. I frowned before lowering my head and rubbing my arm. "I'm sure it'll be fine if I'm with you..." I mumbled, but I wanted to give him a hint about my boredom.
"Just stay here until it's lifted. I'm sure it won't be long." Charli assured me with a hug, but I didn't reciprocate it. "Charli, I....have something to tell you."
"What is it? You can tell me anything, I'll always be here for you, y/n." His words shot a piercing pain through my ribs that threatened to wrench my heart from my chest. I gulped before reluctantly continuing.
"I'm sorry, but I don't think I can marry you-no-I know I can't." I braced myself as I looked up at Charli's perplexed expression. "What do you mean? If this is because of the curse, then...-"
"It's not because of the curse." My eyes were glued to the floor and my feet shuffled on the spot."You don't mean..." Charli backed up slightly. "I'm sorry..." was all I said, but I startled as he lifted a chair and slammed it into a wall. "Are you kidding me, y/n?!" He screamed, but I just cowered away.
"I'm sorry! I never wanted to hurt you!" I pleaded as he ran his hands down the length of his face. He laughed and laughed to himself before gripping his hair and placing his hand on his hip. "Well, I guess it doesn't matter anyway..." He muttered before crossing the room and grabbing my shoulders.
"You're mine." He cupped my face, "And you always will be!" His hands firmed and gripped me harshly. "Charli, you're hurting me..!" I tried to pry his arms away, but he wouldn't budge.
"I'm hurting you?!" His hands shook as he yanked my head forward and dragged me towards the door. "After all I've planned for you? For us!"
"Charli, I don't know what you're talking about!" I yelped as he pulled me out into the hall, his hands roughly tugging my wrists now. "I was going to keep you safe, y/n! Safe and comfortable in your room! Safe while that monster went out and killed himself over those fucking books!"
I froze and yanked against his grasp. "How do you know about that?" My expression darkened as my eyes scanned his face. He stood still for a moment too before pulling me against my will again.
He rushed us down the stairs and through a hall to the left of the grand entrance. "I said, how do you know about that!" I screamed but he shoved an old door opened and threw me down on the dirt and straw-covered ground. "Ask your friends." He said before slamming the door and locking it.
"No! Please!" I yelled, banging on the rusted door, but suddenly a melancholy voice spoke from behind me. "It's no use." I turned to see the black-haired boy curled up in the corner behind a barrier of metal, jail-like bars.
"Dierdre?" I asked, my hand still on the old doorknob. "I said, it's no use. So, just give up!" He threw what looked like a clump of dirt at me before burrowing his head in his knees.
"The crybaby's right." I looked over and saw a man in almost full golden armor across the wall from Dierdre. He hadn't turned my way, but I could see from the back of his head, that his helmet was gone. He had messy brown hair that cascaded down his spine.
"What happened?" I asked as I attempted to slow my breathing. "Couldn't tell you." I could practically hear Antonie's jaw grinding. "One minute I was home-the next I woke up here."
My mind shot to the memory of the poisonous dart I saw seeping into Leo's neck. There was no way those townspeople had fashioned that themselves. Maybe they bought it from here: The oh so noble Guild that does nothing for the poor town it resides in.
"Why is he doing this?" I asked angrily, my gaze shifted to the door. I hoped that maybe, if I stared hard enough, I could burn a hole right through it. "Why else? He wants to be immortal." I heard Dierdre speak up. "But, he's already immortal." I replied in confusion as I watched Dierdre laugh painfully in my face. He lifted his head up to reveal streaming tears.
"A wizard's magic can only get you so far, but our stories....they can fuel your heart forever." He started to lower his head once more.
"Wizard?" I asked, my heart thumping out of my chest. "What? You didn't know? I thought it was obvious." Dierdre laughed once more wiping the tears from his eyes.
I clutched my chest as I felt myself slide down along the old door. I curled my knees to my chest and stared at the ground with wide eyes. Charli never knew a witch-he was the witch-he always was-he used me.
"Where's your husband?" Antonie laughed, still facing the wall. "Don't tell me he left you?" I lowered my head and didn't reply, but that caused Antonie to shoot up and face me. His golden-gloved hand thrust over his eyes.
"He did?!" He practically yelled which made my heart pang even more. "I don't want to talk about it...." But, Antonie's hands now gripped the iron bars and he forced his eyes shut.
"You're telling me that he actually loves you?" His voice was filled with genuine shock but I just shook my head. "I doubt he would abandon me if I even remotely mattered to him-"
"No, he would! He would have to!"I shot my head up and squeezed my hands against my knees. "What are you saying?"
"Think, cursed girl! Think about his Legend!"
I heard Dierdre stir in the corner. "Shit...that's kind of impressive." He was monotone but smiling as water spilled from his red eyes.
I thought for a moment and racked my brain, but when the realization hit, my hands slumped to my sides.
He wasn't just cursed with the ability to hear lies or a deep hunger for souls-he was cursed with an awful probability.
He would have to deceive anyone he ever came to love before they would inevitably be forced to betray him first.
