"L-Leo?" My voice shook as I squirmed out from under him. I noticed a black dot seeping into the side of his neck. I tried to lift his face but he was out cold. It was the first time I had ever seen him sleep, in any other circumstance I would've enjoyed it.
I snapped my head around to the sound of a plethora of rushing feet. I scrambled up from my knees and tried to pull Leo's arms and drag him but he was too heavy, so I hurried and ducked behind a nearby tree.
I clamped a hand over my mouth and peered around the wood as I heard a clamor of voices.
"You were right......King of Deceit.....can't believe it worked...." All of the sounds mixed together as they spoke, but I did clearly make one part out. "Where's the girl he came with?" I leaned my head around the other side and swiftly crawled behind a closer bush to hear them better.
"You think she's the one with the curse?" I saw a man in old, worn cloth nudge a woman who appeared to be wearing a potato sack-like dress. Other people gathered around them and leaned down to look at Leo's body. "No, we'd be able to smell her if she was." The woman raised her nose and sniffed in the air.
"Hey, what should we do about it?" One of the crouching men called up as he pointed down at Leo, clearly afraid to touch him. "Should we kill it?" Another boy cut in and I swear I almost rushed out of the brush. "No," The woman spoke up and my shoulders relaxed slightly, "I doubt we'd get lucky. I hear The Legends've got thick skin."
"Can't we sell him off to the kingdom?" A small voice spoke up from the group, "Pshh," The woman laughed, "They ain't giving us money. It was only by chance that you even managed to clock him with the poison dart anyway." She tapped her finger on what looked like a slingshot in the small boy's hands.
"They don't know that." Another boy countered. The woman scoffed and threw her arms down. "I'm saying, it's a small dose-he's gonna wake up in a few minutes." I sighed in relief, hoping they'd decide it was smarter to just leave him alone.
"So, what should we do?" Someone asked and I watched through the leaves as a sly grin stretched across the woman's face. "What do you think?" She said, nodding her head to the roaring water in front of them.
The lake he had tossed me in was split in two. One side was practically stagnant water while the other flowed in a continuous unnatural stream. I looked around in an attempt so sense any magic or enchantment in the air, but from what I could tell it seemed like a normal forest.
I turned my attention back around and gasped as I saw the group attempting to lift Leo and drop him in the raging river. "No-" I forced my hand over my mouth and ducked down, but I had already caught some of their unwanted attention.
The woman nodded to the burly man next to her and he started stomping my way. I tried to crawl backwards, but a branch snapped under my hand so I rushed to my feet.
But, before I knew it, the man had caught up to me and encased me in his painful grasp. "Ack!" I yelped and thrashed in his arms. "Well, what do we have here?" The woman tapped her foot as the man dragged me her way. "Is this the little rat it picked up from the ball?" She tried to touch my face but I chomped my teeth at her finger. "My, my.." She shook her hand away. "How feisty."
She whipped out a knife and dangled it in front of my face before grazing it against my jaw, I froze and stifled my rapid breaths. "Tell me, where is the girl who carries the curse?" She looked down at Leo's unconscious body, "Or should I say, its wife." I continued to squirm in the strong-man's grasp.
"Why do you need to know?" I challenged with a bitter tone. "So, you do know where she is." She grinned before tsking and sliding the knife down my neck and to the strap on my shoulder. "What a shame that such a pretty girl like you has to get cut."
I wriggled more as she pressed the knife down and sliced through the fabric. The strap fell off of my arm, but that wasn't the only thing. Thick, black blood dripped along my skin and filled the air with a sickeningly sweet smell.
The woman gasped and dropped her knife on the ground. She practically fell to her knees at the sight. But, she her violent shaking wasn't out of fear. Her eyes shined maniacally with hunger as a wide smile curled along her face. "It's you!" She yelled. "It's just as tale had described."
"Blood..." She started, her eyes closed and he nose sniffing with delight, "Blood, oh beautiful blood, so sweet it makes immortal souls weep." She brought her hand forward and swiped some of the substance onto her finger before slowly bringing it to her mouth.
She licked it off of her finger and rolled her eyes in a long, painful motion. "Mm.." Her tone was laced with pleasure as her eyes met mine. I was cringing and struggling in the man's grasp.
I looked to the side to see the other men lifting Leo's body once more. "No!" I shouted with a cry, "You can take me, just-just leave him alone!" I pleaded and the woman smiled at me, eyes dancing with delight. "How sweet. You really do care for your monster of a husband." She pouted her lip as I nodded frantically.
"Drop him." She said coldly and I screamed as Leo's body fell into the water, collided with the thrashing waves, and fell under-he was swept up in the river and now drowning somewhere I wasn't able to see.
"No! Please!" I yelled as the man turned and began to carry me away. "Let's go!" The woman laughed and skipped next to me. "You have no idea what a service you're doing to our village." She tried to speak to me but I just cried and slumped in the large man's arms.
Leo was going to die, and it was my fault.
