Suddenly, we were kissing again and I felt as if he might devour me on the spot. My hands slid up the back of his shirt as his clutched my waist and made their way up to the straps of my dress. I moved mine around his ribs before bringing them to his chest to push him forward so I could break for air.
But, the second I did, he grabbed them and pinned them to the cushion above my head before pressing his mouth to mine. His skin and breath was hot as his jaw moved and his lips enveloped mine. I was blushing from the intensity-but, I opened my eyes and saw that he was as well. Red was painted across his moonlit features and his eyelashes fluttered and brushed against my face. But, when he brought his lids open and his galaxies met my gaze, he shot up instantly and turned away from the bed.
"I'll...let you rest now..-" He started for the door, the back of his hand covering his mouth, but I huffed in anger and disbelief. "No! No, you don't get to just shut me out again! Not after that!" I stood up and pointed an accusatory finger in his direction.
"Well, what do you want me to do, y/n?!" He yelled, but it wasn't angry-more like desperate. I frowned at him and worked my jaw. "Just stay." I pleaded but he shook his head vigorously. "I...can't." He averted his eyes, heat creeped up his neck as he looked away. "Just...talk to me-tell me anything. I'll listen. I just...don't want you to leave." I said, rubbing my arm.
He laughed and practically fell onto the floor, his back slid down against the wooden door and his elbow propped against his knee, his other leg laid extended as his forehead rested in his hand.
"What do you want to know?" He asked, shaking his head as if he couldn't believe his own actions. "Whatever you want to tell me." I said, "I'm here." I spoke in hopes of him opening up to me since he always refrained from sharing the slightest bit of information, but he just laughed painfully.
"But, you can't always be here, y/n." He said harshly yet sad. "Sure I can," I countered, "After we get all of the books, we can-"
"But, that's not how it's going to work." His arms dropped to the floor and he threw his head back. "If this is about Charleon, then-" I furrowed my brow but he cut me off. "It's not about him, y/n. This," He motioned between me and him, "just can't work.""Give me one good reason why!" I was desperate as I stood in front of him. The way he stared at the ceiling with such defeat made him a pitiful sight. "Let me tell you a story." He smiled, raised his brows at me until I sat down across from him.
"All of us Legends have a story." He shook his head as if he was telling a hilarious tale. "And all of us-for the most part-are desperate to reach the end. Because that means freedom...that means mortality." He brought his head down and tilted it at me. "You wanna know what they are?-the endings."
I gulped and slowly nodded as he ran a hand down the length of his face. "Antonie gets to finally see again-he can be whatever or whoever he wants," He laughed mockingly as he spoke, "Esmeralda's enchantment will come back to her stronger than before and she can love whoever she wants-and they'll love her back." He gulped now, averted his gaze to the floor, "Dierdre....he won't have to cry anymore. He won't have to feast off of tears. He'll get to be happy and he'll get to live out the rest of his life like that."
His smile faded into a serious expression as he moved his finger along the grains in the floor. "But, do you know what happens to me?" He didn't look up to see my nod, he just swallowed hesitantly before continuing. "I get to finally be free from my curse-the souls will flow out of me and I'll be relieved," He looked at me now with a sorrowful expression, "but, only for a second...because, once the souls are released, the earth will split in two."
"What?" My heart dropped in my chest. "But, don't worry, I'll kill myself before that happens."
I stared at him with shock, my mouth gaping before I harshly swallowed. "Why go through all of that just to die?" My lip quivered but my voice was firm.
"Because, even if only for a second, I'll be free-I'll be mortal-human." He looked down again, "The other Legends all had mortality before. They got to live as humans-they had that chance. But, my karma started the second I was born. I've always been a monster-the death of all good things."
"But, you're not!" I yelled, rushing forward to cup his face. "You've shown me you're not." I rubbed my thumb against his cheek but he just smiled at me-the same distant and cruel way he always had. "But, I haven't shown you everything, y/n."
I furrowed my brow. "What do you mean?"
"There's no length I wouldn't go to-to reach my end. There's nothing I wouldn't do. Nothing." He brought a hand up and brushed a stray hair behind my ear, but the way he spoke filled me with dread. "Do you understand, y/n?" He asked, but I still shook my head, denying any implications he was making.
"No curse or vault could ever stand in my way." He smiled and I shifted on his lap. "What are you saying?" My eyes searched his for something more, something other than what I thought he was saying, but he just straightened out his features and moved his thumb along my jaw.
"What do you think, y/n?"
