ELENA'S POV :

Tonight, Lydia is celebrating her birthday. It's a full moon but in a way, I think it will do us good to take our minds off things. Lydia has just arrived at my place alongside Allison and big bags no doubt filled with clothes.

"Stop everything and come see these wonders," she asks me. "It will take a while."

I smile as she enters. The brunette follows closely behind her, giving me a half-laughing, half-despaired look from our friend. She still doesn't know about her mother who is unfortunately already condemned as we speak. Her deathbed awaits her firmly and she will certainly join her tonight. The bite still hasn't killed her, which means she will transform. As far as I know, hunters who have been bitten have a duty to kill themselves before their change. I feel a little guilty towards Ally. I never liked her mother but my friend is going to suffer losing her. If I had gone back I might have been able to do something and Derek wouldn't have had to bite her to survive. On the other hand, would Scott have survived without my blood ? Maybe yes or maybe no. We'll never know.

We head to the living room and Lydia pulls out different dresses from the bags to show us.

"How many outfits have you planned for tonight ?" Allison asks.

"It's my birthday. So I have a first one to greet the guests. A second one for the evening and... a third one for the after party."

"You didn't send any invitation, is that normal ?"

"It's the biggest party of the year," she answers me. "Everyone knows that."

"But maybe... things are a little different this year."

"Why ?"

Because you got bitten by a psychopathic werewolf, you've been walking around naked in the woods for days, and you tend to have pretty strange reactions whether alone or in public.

"Because things have changed lately," Allison replies. "Things and people."

"Like Jackson. By the way, do you know if he's coming tonight ?"

Allison elbows me in the ribs. Maybe I wasn't very tactful. But I might as well go straight there instead of beating around the bush. His ex-girlfriend looks at me strangely, probably wondering why I'm interested since I never liked him.

"Everyone will come," the redhead assures us.

She puts on her radiant smile again and picks up two more dresses.

"I got these on sale. They're for you."

"They're beautiful."

"I love it," I agree.

We just got to the party. And there's... well, we're actually. It's kind of sad.
