Author's POV
They arrived at the mansion, the atmosphere between them fraught with tension. Ena strode inside without a backward glance at Jungkook, heading straight to her room. Jungkook followed, his expression somber, the weight of his regret visible in his posture.
In her room, Ena placed her bag on the bed, then turned to face him, her eyes cold and distant. "What is it?" she asked, her voice sharp and unyielding.
Jungkook took a moment, closing his eyes as if to steady himself. "I'm sorry," he began, his voice laden with sincerity and remorse.
"Is that all you have to say after the scene you caused at the university?" Ena's tone was clipped, her gaze piercing.
"Yes," he replied, meeting her eyes. "I wanted to apologize and clarify the misunderstanding."
"Misunderstanding?" Ena's voice dripped with disbelief. "Isn't it a bit late for that?"
"Ena, please, hear me out," Jungkook pleaded, desperation creeping into his tone.
She folded her arms, her stance rigid. "I'm listening," she replied curtly.
Jungkook looked down, struggling with the weight of his words. "I'm sorry for everything. It's my fault. I had someone follow you because I felt something was amiss. He reported seeing you at the hospital with Kim Taehyung and even provided photos.... photos of you hugging him." He paused, his voice faltering. "I lost my composure and acted rashly."
Ena remained silent, her expression inscrutable, her silence more damning than words.
"I know I should have spoken to you first," Jungkook continued, his voice low. "But you understand, don't you? When you saw me with Jessica, you didn't confront me either."
"So you had me followed?" Ena's voice was sharp, edged with betrayal.
"I was concerned about your behavior," Jungkook confessed, his shoulders sagging under the weight of his guilt.
"Why would your informant lie to you?" Ena demanded, her eyes narrowing.
Jungkook's expression darkened. "He was coerced. Threatened that if he didn't comply, he would lose his daughter."
Ena's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of shock breaking through her stoic facade. "Who would do such a thing?"
"I don't know yet," Jungkook admitted, frustration clear in his voice. "But what I do know is that you're not safe."
Ena let out a bitter laugh, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I know... It's always like that."
Jungkook felt a sharp pang in his chest at her words, the pain evident in his eyes. "I promise, I'll protect you," he vowed, stepping closer, his voice firm.
"Protect me? From whom? You?" Ena's voice was laced with sarcasm and pain.
"Ena, this isn't the time to argue. I'll assign guards to you, wherever you go," Jungkook declared, his tone brooking no argument.
"No. I refuse," Ena retorted, shaking her head with defiant resolve.
Jungkook sighed heavily. "I'm sorry, Ena. I know I've wronged you, but in this matter, I can't concede."
"Try me," Ena challenged, her voice cold as she turned and walked out of the room, leaving Jungkook standing there, his heart heavy with the consequences of his actions.
-------------The dinner table was enveloped in a tense silence, neither Ena nor Jungkook speaking as they ate. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken words and unresolved emotions. Suddenly, the door opened, and Jungwon entered the room with a sarcastic smile stumbled in, a hint of drunkenness in his demeanor.
