Present Day – The Jeon Mansion

The Jeon mansion was unnervingly quiet that afternoon. Ena, feeling the weight of everything, decided to step out of her room and breathe some life into her day. As she wandered into the vast, empty living room, she froze. Standing near the grand piano was Mrs. Jeon, her gaze sharp and unyielding as it locked onto Ena.

“Well, look who’s decided to grace us with her presence,” Mrs. Jeon said, her voice cold and clipped, her words cutting through the silence like shards of glass.

Ena straightened her posture, her heart pounding but her face calm. “I wasn’t aware my movements were being monitored,” she replied, her voice steady but guarded.

Mrs. Jeon smirked, setting down the book she had been holding. “Oh, Ena, don’t flatter yourself. You’re hardly interesting enough to monitor.” She stepped closer, her heels clicking ominously on the marble floor. “But while you’re here, perhaps it’s time we had a little talk. A proper one.”

Ena clenched her fists at her sides, refusing to be intimidated. “What is it now, Mrs. Jeon? Another warning about how I don’t belong here? Another reminder of how unworthy I am?”

Mrs. Jeon tilted her head, her eyes narrowing. “You catch on quickly. Maybe you’re not as naive as I thought.” She walked closer, her presence looming as she continued, her tone sharper now. “Let me make one thing perfectly clear: you don’t belong here. You never did, and you never will. Jungkook might be too blind to see it, but I’m not. You’re a weakness he can’t afford, Ena.”

Ena’s chest tightened, but she held her ground. “Jungkook loves me. And I love him. That’s all that should matter.”

Mrs. Jeon let out a bitter laugh, her voice dripping with disdain. “Love? How quaint. Do you think love is enough in this family? Do you think it’s enough to survive in this world? You’re a burden, Ena—a liability. You’ll drag him down with you, and when you do, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.”

Ena felt her composure slipping, her voice trembling with anger. “Why do you hate me so much? What have I ever done to deserve this from you?”

Mrs. Jeon’s smirk faded, her expression hardening. “You exist,” she said simply, her voice cold and final. “You exist in a place where you don’t belong, where you’ll never belong. You’re a stain on this family, and I won’t let you ruin everything we’ve built.”

Tears stung Ena’s eyes, but before she could respond, a familiar voice interrupted, low and steady.

“Mrs. Jeon!”

Both women turned to see Jungkook standing in the doorway. His dark eyes were unreadable, but the tension in his body was palpable. He walked toward Ena without sparing Mrs. Jeon a second glance.

“Jungkook,” Mrs. Jeon said smoothly, though there was a flicker of unease in her tone. “I was just—”

“Don’t,” Jungkook said quietly, his voice calm but firm. He reached Ena’s side and took her hand in his, his grip warm and reassuring. “Don’t bother explaining.”

Mrs. Jeon’s expression faltered for a moment before she composed herself. “Jungkook, you know I’m only trying to protect you from this murderer—”

“That’s enough!” Jungkook snapped, his calm façade breaking for the briefest moment. His voice was sharp but still controlled, his dark eyes now blazing with a warning. “I’ve told you before: stop saying that.

Mrs. Jeon’s lips pressed into a thin line, her expression hardening as she looked between her son and Ena.

Jungkook’s grip on Ena’s hand tightened slightly as he looked at his stepmother.
