Author's POV
She sat by the pool, lost in thoughts she wished she could escape. The scenarios playing out in her mind often left her feeling lightheaded and pained, so deeply that at times, she lost her will to live. Yet, she endured these tormenting thoughts for the sake of her young sister, Sarah, her sole source of joy and the reason for her resilience. Sarah, just seventeen, was her life's anchor.
Her reverie was interrupted by the maid's voice, informing her that her uncle had summoned her for dinner.
Ena's POV
Reluctantly, I followed the maid's instructions and made my way to the dining table. All the family members were present, save for the surly one. It was a recurring pattern; he rarely dined with us.
I took my seat.
"Do I always have to ask you to join us for dinner, Ena?" Uncle Jeon's voice broke the silence, his expression stern.
"I'm sorry," I murmured, bowing slightly.
"Oh, come on. Sometimes I wonder if I don't call you, you'd go to bed on an empty stomach. You're neglecting yourself. Remember, you have a sister to care for, and you won't be able to do that if you continue to disregard your own well-being. Do you understand?"
"Yes," I whispered, barely audible.
"Darling, you don't need to remind her every time. She's twenty-four; she can take care of herself. You shouldn't trouble yourself too much over someone who isn't even family," his wife interjected.
Mira, Uncle Jeon's second wife, was someone I could never quite warm to. I often wondered what I had done to deserve her disdain.
"Mira! I've told you countless times that Ena is like my own child, just like Jungkook and Jungwon. Please refrain from repeating this," Uncle Jeon retorted sharply.
Uncle Jeon had been more of a father to me than anyone else. Sometimes I wondered if I would still be alive had I not found him.
Mira fell silent and continued with her meal, while I once again toyed with my food.
Dinner concluded, and everyone retired to their rooms. As I made my way to mine, I collided with something hard. Looking up, I saw Jungwon staring down at me.
"Watch where you're going," he said, his tone mocking.
"If you had been looking where you were going, perhaps this collision could have been avoided," I retorted sarcastically.
"Feeling brave, are we?" He pressed closer, causing me to stumble.
"Look behind you; it seems you have something on your shoulders," he taunted. I glanced behind me and saw nothing.
"Your wings... I need to trim them promptly." His bickering was nothing new; he always seemed to relish arguing as if he were a child seeking to win at any cost.
"Move. I need to sleep," I said coldly.
"Would you like me to accompany you, sweetheart?" His tone was laced with distaste.
I could scarcely contain my irritation. I wanted nothing more than to confront him, but I held my tongue and walked past him, heading upstairs to my room. He chuckled behind me.
His presence was repugnant, yet I was powerless to change my situation. I couldn't bring myself to complain to Uncle Jeon, who had taken me and Sarah into his home for the past decade, providing for our education. Jungwon exploited this fact, knowing well my reluctance to disturb Uncle Jeon.
I was nearing the end of my studies, while Sarah was in her final year in highschool at her dormitory, a decision I had made to shield her from Mrs. Jeon's harsh words. I couldn't tolerate Mira's remarks directed at Sarah, so I had requested Uncle Jeon to admit her to the dormitory. It was for the best.
