Author's POV
All three of them enjoyed breakfast together, with Ena appearing particularly cheerful as she conversed with her younger sister. Jungkook found himself stealing glances at Ena more frequently than usual, his mind replaying the serene image of them sleeping together on the balcony this morning. He felt a warmth in his chest, a sense of relief.
As they finished their meal, Ena mentioned to Sarah that she needed to go to university, explaining that she had missed some days. After Ena left, Sarah and Jungkook remained at home. Jungkook, engrossed in his work-from-home setup, didn't notice Sarah approached his study until she knocked gently on the door.
"Yes?" he responded, his voice slightly muffled through the door.
Sarah entered cautiously, meeting Jungkook's welcoming gaze as he gestured for her to sit across from him.
"Yesterday, you mentioned that you had something to ask me about Ena. What is it?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
Jungkook hesitated, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. "Sarah, I want you to tell me about Ena's past.." He paused. ".... and about your father," he finally said, his tone earnest yet tentative.
Sarah's eyes widened slightly in surprise. "Why do you want to know?" she asked softly, her voice filled with concern.
Jungkook took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "You know how your sister is. Even if I ask her, she won't tell me anything. But I feel like I need to know; it seems important, critical even," he explained, his brow furrowed with worry.
Sarah looked down, her hands fidgeting in her lap. "I understand your concern, but it's not my place to talk about her trauma. It's a sensitive issue, and I hope you understand. I'm sorry," she said, standing up, ready to leave the room.
But Jungkook's next words stopped her in her tracks. "Sometimes Ena stirs in her sleep, mumbling things. But when I ask her about it, she brushes it off. I'm her husband. I think I have the right to know, especially if it's something troubling her," he said, his voice firm and determined.
Sarah turned back to face him, her expression troubled. "She still has nightmares?" she whispered, more to herself than to him.
"Nightmares?" Jungkook echoed, his eyes widening in alarm.
"Unfortunately, yes," Sarah sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly as she sank back into the chair. She looked at Jungkook with a mixture of sadness and resolve. "i should tell you then,"she said, her voice steadying as she prepared to reveal the story her sister had kept hidden for so long.
flashback
Ena and Sarah lived with their father, Lee Dong Seok, who was a successful and wealthy businessman. The girls lost their mother shortly after Sarah's birth, leaving Lee to raise his daughters on his own. Despite this tragedy, their early years were marked by comfort and security, though their father's demanding career meant he was often absent. Lee would leave early in the morning and return late at night, usually after Ena and Sarah had gone to bed, leaving them with little opportunity to spend time with him.
Their world was shattered when Lee was betrayed by his closest friend and assistant. The betrayal was a calculated and ruthless act that left Lee with nothing but their family home, as he lost his business, properties, and wealth. The sudden downfall had a devastating effect on Lee, who had been accustomed to a life of luxury and success. The once-proud businessman was now reduced to a shadow of his former self.
Lee began coming home drunk, his spirit broken by the loss of his company and the betrayal of his friend. The man who once commanded respect in the business world now stumbled through the door each night, reeking of alcohol and despair. The loss had driven him into a deep depression, and he soon turned to alcohol and drugs as a means of escape. The transformation was rapid and alarming; Lee became a real drunkard within a short period, and his drinking quickly spiraled into drug addiction.
