Author's Pov
It was past midnight. Ena lay on the bed, her eyes tracing Jungkook’s silhouette through the glass door. He stood on the balcony, the faint glow of his cigarette tip flickering in the darkness, each drag pulling toxic smoke into his lungs. The tension between them was suffocating, born from the unresolved argument that had rendered them silent for hours.
Ena’s chest tightened as she watched him. The weight of their strained relationship bore down on her until her patience snapped. She swung her legs off the bed and walked to him, the cold air outside biting against her skin.
“Will you please stop smoking?” she demanded, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and desperation. “It’s been three hours since you started, and you’re not even on one cigarette—you’re on two at the same time!”
Jungkook turned his head slightly, exhaling a cloud of smoke into the night. “Is it bothering you?” he asked, his tone calm but distant.
Ena stood still, her silence carrying the answer he already knew.
“You said you’d take the initiative,” she reminded him softly, though her anger simmered beneath the surface. “You promised to try for us. If you mean it… can you quit smoking?”
For a moment, the world seemed to pause. Jungkook stared at the horizon, his expression unreadable. Without a word, he dropped both cigarettes onto the floor and crushed them under his heel, his silent act speaking louder than anything he could have said.
Ena exhaled slowly, relief tinged with lingering frustration. But her resolve wasn’t done testing him.
“I have a question,” she said, her voice steadier now.
Jungkook finally looked at her, his gaze heavy with exhaustion. “What is it?”
“Do you trust me?” she asked, her words trembling with unspoken pain. “Do you believe me when I say I didn’t hurt Uncle?”
Silence fell between them again, thicker than the smoke he had been inhaling. Jungkook’s lips parted as if he were about to speak, but no words came.
Ena waited, her heart balancing on the edge of his response.
“I… I’ll always trust you,” Jungkook said, his voice low but steady. His words held a weight that seemed to lift some of the burden off her shoulders. “I made a mistake once, but I won’t repeat it. I won’t doubt you again.”
Ena felt a strange twist deep in her abdomen, a flutter she couldn’t quite place. The man who had once blamed her, the one who had cast shadows on her truth, was now offering her his unwavering trust—blindly, without a single shred of proof. The magnitude of it overwhelmed her, leaving her both relieved and terrified.
Jungkook stepped closer, his eyes darkened by the depth of his sincerity. “I’ll wait for Dad to wake up,” he continued, his voice softening, “but believe me, I’ll trust you until then… with my soul.”
The finality in his words cut through the space between them, leaving Ena suspended in the rawness of what he had just given her. She stood motionless, the quiet thrum of his trust reverberating in her chest, as if it were a promise she couldn’t break—even if she wanted to.
A tear escaped from Ena’s eye, betraying the vulnerability she tried so hard to conceal. Jungkook’s thumb brushed against her cheek gently, the touch sending a shock through her, as though he were reaching into her soul. He leaned closer, the weight of his presence pulling at her, but before their proximity could become something more, she stepped back abruptly.
“I… I’m sleepy,” she stammered, her voice trembling, betraying the storm inside. “I’m going to bed. Come soon.”
Without waiting for a response, she turned and jogged back to the room, her feet barely touching the ground as she fled from the moment. Her heart hammered in her chest, the rhythm of it deafening in her ears, each beat a reminder of the longing she tried to suppress. She collapsed onto the bed, pulling the covers tightly around her, her mind spinning, her body still trembling from the intensity of what had almost been. She closed her eyes, but the sound of her own heartbeat thudded in her ears, a constant, painful reminder that things between them had irrevocably shifted.
