"Are you ready?" Knox asks me with a dazzling smile while holding out his hand.
I'm on the edge of a cliff more than four thousand metres above the ground and Knox seriously thinks I'll follow him and jump like this, hoping that my instinct to fly will kick in. If I had the opportunity to look at myself in a mirror, I know in advance that my skin tone would be pasty white and that my expression would clearly express nameless terror. I take a step back, as my limbs, which seem to be made of marshmallow, are at risk of sagging under my weight. I take another step back as Knox takes one in my direction. My heart is beating fast and a feeling of dizziness takes over my brain.
"Baby," he calls to me so that I can look at him.
I meet his eyes filled with amusement. The bastard! He takes pleasure in watching me paralyzed with fear, fearing for my life. I know I could probably survive the fall, but the feeling of crashing to the ground like a pancake must be extremely painful. It's more the psychological shock that will be the worst to heal. I frown to show him that I'm not in the mood for fun in this situation.
"Knox, that's impossible. I can't do that!" My voice is filled with doubt in my flying skills at the moment.
He moves a little closer to me and instinctively I step back. I don't want him to do something wrong and push me off the cliff like a mother bird pushing her babies out of the nest. His mouth forms a frank smile at my reaction.
"Don't come near Knox, I'm serious. We should go back and try another day. It's not a good day." I try to make him see the reason.
It must have been over an hour that he tried to convince me to jump with him, but nothing worked. I'm petrified on the spot. Suddenly understanding my reaction to his proximity, he becomes serious again and his smile disappears from his soft lips that I love so much.
"Hey, do you think I would push you like that?" His deep voice becomes soft and reassuring. When his voice takes on this tone, he could almost convince me.
"I've been telling you all along, I'm incapable of it. I'll crash to the ground, that's for sure." My body shivers in fear as if to support what my brain is trying to tell me about the idea of throwing myself off a cliff without protection.
Knox takes a deep breath to ease the annoyance caused by my reservation about his intention to use extreme techniques to teach the art of flight.
"You're born to fly. Trust me on this. Besides, you love it."
He suddenly grabs my wrist when I least expected it. He pulls me against his warm body and turns me around so my back is to him and facing my greatest fear.
"No... no...no... Wait Knox. Don't do this," I beg him as he pushes me a little closer to the edge.
"Close your eyes," his calm but authoritative voice orders me.
"Never in my life," I told him, clinging like a desperate person to his body.
I feel him give a slight chuckle. I don't find it funny at all. Seeing that we will never succeed that way, he turns me to face him and presses his lips against mine.
"Ah!" He wants to play it unfair," I said to myself, understanding his little trick too well.
His lips now move down to my stroke and I feel myself melting against his body pressed against mine. I can't think of anything when he does this. He possessively takes my mouth again and slides his tongue to caress every corner of it. I close my eyes in pleasure and let myself go into this whirlwind of delicious sensations. After a moment, Knox removes his lips from mine and I slowly come back to reality. Opening my eyes, I notice with horror that we're in the sky and that my beloved one is holding me while his immense white wings flap to prevent us from falling towards the ground. I tense and grab Knox's sweater.
"As if that could stop me from falling," I said to myself, finding it ridiculous that I didn't grab something more solid like his broad shoulders, for example.
"Nova, look at me! I'll let you go and you'll concentrate on getting your wings out. It's understood?" he gives me his instructions as optimistically as possible.
"You're not going to do that, are you?" I tell him in my panicked voice.
I'm trapped. I have no other choice. Knox will release his grip on me and I will collapse to the ground. I'm already anticipating the pain of the impact. I resign myself and close my eyes. I don't want to see the ground coming. Then I feel it. Knox's arms release me and the wind begins to blow in my face. I have to go down extremely quickly. This is the feeling skydivers like to feel: free fall. Well, I hate it. I start screaming at the top of my lungs, losing all self-control and the ability to spread my supposedly buried wings. I hear Knox flying right next to me. He wants to have a front-row seat to my failed landing?
"Baby, concentrate. Think about your wings and open them right away," he said to me in a voice tinged with impatience.
"Come on Nova, you can do it. Think about your wings. My wings," I said to myself, stopping shouting and focusing a little more on the task. If Knox says it, it's because he's seen me fly before. So, I have wings and I know how to fly.
"It's like riding a bike, it shouldn't be forgotten," I encouraged myself without optimism.
Then an image comes to mind. Wings! I capture this image and keep it. Finally, the whistling of the wind in my ears quiets and I open one eye slightly. I'm suspended in the air and Knox looks at me with a beaming smile. I see him detailing me from head to toe.
"Fabulous. I will never tire of looking at them," he says, looking at me with his eyes full of wonder.
I tilt my head slightly on my shoulder, and what I see leaves me speechless. My wings. They're erect behind my back and gently beat the air around me. They're bright red with tones of orange and yellow. They shine and sparkle with dazzling brilliance. Flames dance on their surface like an inferno. They're immense and their feathers first rise towards the sky before falling in a long fall. If I was on the ground, they would almost touch it. A luminous glow surrounds me and protects me like a shield. I'm amazed by their spectacular splendour. I feel the muscles in my back react to each of their beats. They have always been an integral part of me. I begin exploring this area by drawing circles, performing dives and spirals in the airspace. I finally turn to Knox as a laugh escapes from his chest when he sees me doing all these tricks.
"Come on, let's go back!" he said to me with a look full of desire.
I then start to fly as quickly as possible. The same desire rages within me. I love him so much, especially when he looks at me like that. I couldn't function without his presence. A million lives aren't enough to be in his company. When he sees me leaving quickly, he smiles and gives me a head start before taking off after me. The fear completely dissolved as my body instinctively controlled my new wings. I'm even starting to enjoy it. I flap my wings faster as I see Knox right behind me. He catches up to me easily and traps me in his huge arms. I surrender to him and kiss him passionately to reward him for his victory.
"I love you" he breathes between two kisses.
