What does an ideal job look like? For many, this is a quiet office with a comfortable armchair, free access to a coffee machine and a boss who gives you an extra day off every month and gives you bonuses. For Jisoo, the ideal job is an irregular schedule, a constant siren howl that she stopped noticing a long time ago, frequent pain in overstressed muscles, an asshole boss who constantly asks to take an extra shift. And also the smell of medicines, blood, screams and a lot of rather unsightly things that have become ingrained in the consciousness. But all this fades when, after another day at work, she realizes that she saved someone's life again today. So yes, a paramedic is the perfect job for Jisoo.
All her life, as long as she can remember, she dreamed of becoming a doctor to help people like her mother. Her mom was an outstanding surgeon, pulling people out of the dead. Jisoo also chose surgery, but before becoming a full-fledged doctor, she wanted to gain experience, for which she got a job as a paramedic. Her mother, of course, was against it, but Jisoo herself has never regretted her choice until now. It was the second year she had postponed an internship at a prestigious clinic, having found herself in this crazy job.
The working day was going on as usual. In the morning, there were several trips together with firefighters and rescuers to road accidents and another call to the neighboring area for a stabbing. Routine. Jisoo has long been used to facing terrible things at her job. The main rule of any rescue worker is not to take anything to heart. It may sound cruel, but you need to treat people only as work: check their pulse, examine, treat wounds, give them the necessary drugs, take them to the hospital and forget. There is no other way. If you think too much about each injured person, you will soon have a nervous breakdown yourself.
Jisoo stretched blissfully, trying to stretch her legs as far as the passenger's seat in the ambulance would allow. The last challenge turned out to be very stressful. She and Lisa had to pump out a big man with a heart attack for twenty minutes, and then carry him out of the house on a stretcher on their own to take him to the hospital. There were a couple of minutes left before the end of the working day, so she just had to get to her unit, change her clothes and go on a well-deserved rest.
-I'm going to die if caffeine doesn't get into my system right now.- Lisa groaned plaintively, skillfully steering her "baby", as she affectionately called the ambulance.
Jisoo could only roll her eyes, realizing that her friend couldn't be persuaded, and she would stop at the nearest gas station or store for a "rest". Jisoo met Lisa while studying at the university, and then fate brought them together at work, which both were happy about. Lisa was an excellent paramedic and an even better driver, so in critical situations, when every second could be the price of someone's life, she got behind the wheel of her "baby" while Jisoo saved the patient's life.
-Well, no, you won't be able to pull it off again.- Jisoo narrowed her eyes, glaring at her friend. Judging by the fact that the car stopped at a small shop, but Lisa herself didn't move, she wanted Jisoo to go to buy her coffee. Again. For the third time in a day.
-Come on, Jisoo, you know how hard it is to control this damn piece of iron, I'm too tired.- Lisa's puppy dog eyes could do wonders. Yes, Jisoo knew perfectly well that one way or another her friend would make her go for coffee with her whining. Muttering a couple of curses under her breath, Jisoo got out of the car and walked towards the entrance, not hearing Lisa stroking the steering wheel saying: "I'm sorry, baby, you know I'm not serious, you're the best."
The ringing of the bell above the door broke the silence inside the store. Tucking a strand of black hair that had escaped from her high ponytail behind her ear, Jisoo wearily moved forward. They had already visited this store a couple of times, so she remembered that the coffee machine should be somewhere near the right wall. The end of the working day, two long—awaited days off ahead - naturally, the paramedic's thoughts were far from this place, so it was only halfway through that she realized that the store was not just quiet, but too quiet. The silence was broken only by her footsteps, the hum of cold storage and a strange rustling from somewhere to the left. Where are all the visitors? Jisoo remembered the local salesman very well — a sweet, sociable old man who liked to chat with customers.
