Stella,
Meet me in front of my house tonight after dark.
—Sam
I folded the letter up and stuffed it in my back pocket as I stared at the back of Sam's house across the dimly lit town square. I knew he was waiting for me just on the other side and I started to wonder whether I really wanted to do this or not. I had no idea why he was requesting that I meet him outside his house after dark, but I had some ideas floating around in my mind as to what this could all be about, the main one being that someone had heard Alice call him my boyfriend at the concert and word traveled to him and now he was confronting me about my supposed delusions.
As I rounded the corner of Emily's house, I spotted Sam immediately, his back turned to me as he paced back and forth, clearly anxiously waiting for my arrival.
My footsteps echoed off the cobblestone and grabbed Sam's attention. He looked up at me and his nervous expression melted into one of relief. Maybe he had thought there was a chance I wouldn't come and as much as I hated to admit it, I almost didn't.
"You're here." He said, sounding so much like Abigail did when I went to meet her at the community center back in spring. "I wanted to, uh, talk."
Talk. Everyone's anxiety ran high at the sound of the word talk and mine was no different.
"Talk about what?" I asked, taking another step closer to him.
Sam quickly glanced back at his house before looking at me again. "It's cold out here." He stated. "My mom is in the living room..." Sam looked towards the front door of his house, the wheels clearly turning in his head. "Let's sneak into my room. Follow me." Sam tiptoed over to the window on the front of the house, his room just beyond the window pane. He pressed his palms against the glass and slowly slid the window up just enough that he could wriggle his way inside through the window.
Once Sam was safely on the other side of the window, he reached his arms out to me through the opening, beckoning me to follow him. I put my head through the window first, followed by the top half of my torso. Sam grabbed me under my arms and pulled as I wiggled my own body through the window and into his room. It felt juvenile and childish, but youthful and exhilarating at the same time.
"You okay?" Sam asked as I brushed some dirt and dust off my pants.
"Fine." I smiled, feeling slightly out of breath from just climbing through a window.
"Thanks for meeting me." Sam said, that familiar bashful blush growing across the bridge of his nose. "Right, so, I wanted to... uh... talk to you about something."
"Right." I said, my heart beating so fast and my mind racing through the worst scenario possible as it always did. I didn't say anything after that but simply nodded and swallowed hard, waiting for him to say something.
Sam also swallowed hard before he continued, clearly trying to fight against his nerves. "We've grown pretty close since you first arrived here back in spring, I think, and—"
There was a knock on the door cutting Sam off and a muffled voice calling out from the other side. "Sam? I'm coming in, honey!"
"Shit..." Sam muttered, looking around for somewhere to hide me. "Quick, hide in my bed." He pulled the covers aside for me.
"What?!" I frantically half whispered at him.
"Just get under the covers and lay flat." Sam instructed, "She won't see you, I promise."
I did as Sam said, jumping into his bed, throwing the blankets on top of me and laying as flat and still as I could. I heard the door open and light, airy footsteps pad across the wooden floor. What was it with Jodi always unknowingly killing the moment?
"Everything okay, honey?" Jodi asked, her tone full of motherly concern. "I thought I heard some weird sounds coming from your room. Were you doing something... bad?"
It took everything in me not to snort and laugh at Jodi's inquiry. I admired Jodi's innocence and maternal nature but in a moment like this, I found it quite comical.
"Yoba, mom, no!" I heard Sam exclaim. "I was just... doing push-ups! I want to be strong enough to beat dad in arm wrestling when he gets back. That's all..."
"Oh! Well I guess that explains why you're all red and sweaty." Jodi giggled. "Well, good luck with your practice. I'll see you in the morning."
"Night, Mom..." Sam grumbled and I could hear Jodi's light footsteps quickly make their way back out of Sam's room.
"Shit, that was close..." Sam breathed as soon as the door clicked closed.
I pushed the covers down off my face and looked at Sam, cracking a wide grin and trying my best not to burst out laughing. "Something bad?" I quoted Jodi, teasing Sam.
Sam grabbed a pillow from off his bed and hit me with it. "Shut up..." He grumbled.
I sat up, mouth agape but twisted up into a smile with wisps of hair covering my face from the impact of the pillow. If he wanted to start a war, he got it. I pushed my hair out of my face and grabbed another pillow off the bed and drew it back before swinging the pillow at him in a counter attack. Sam jumped up onto the bed, kneeling next to where I was sitting, and hit me in the face with the pillow again.
I pushed the covers of his bed fully off my legs now and rose to my knees in front of him so we were kneeling in front of one another on the bed. I drew the pillow back behind my head, ready to attack again but his eyes caught mine and I was frozen in place by his gaze. I let the pillow go behind my head and dropped my hands by my side, surrendering. Both our breathing was labored from the pillow fight that he'd just initiated and I knelt there in front of him, looking into his eyes as we both heavily breathed in and out.
"I really like you, Stella." Sam said between his heavy breathing as his lungs tried to catch back up. "That's what I was trying to say earlier."
Instinctively, I leaned my body closer to his, placing my hands on his chest. My eyes jumped back and forth a few times between Sam's own eyes and his lips just inches away from my own. He leaned his head in closer to mine, resting his hands on the small of my back and pressing my hips softly into his. His lips hovered over my own for just a moment and I could feel his hesitation but it quickly melted away as he then closed the gap between us, pressing his lips to mine. The kiss was slow at first and quickened in pace the more kisses he pressed against me; the more I tasted him. My arms wrapped around his neck and he fully pressed his body into mine now. His tongue glided against my bottom lip and finally I had discovered Sam's secret tongue piercing the way I'd always wanted to since that day I first saw a glimpse of it. I loosened my arms around his neck as his hands traveled up my sides and reached up to cradle each side of my face as he kissed me as if he were holding on so I didn't suddenly dissipate like a dream.
He broke for a moment, keeping his forehead pressed against mine and his palms resting on my flushed cheeks. I could feel his labored breath against my skin as he exhaled. "I'm going to be thinking about this night for a long time."
