Once Abigail had decided to start talking to me again, she also decided she was going to throw a grand birthday celebration for Sebastian and I, since both our birthdays were in winter and very close to one another, but also because she had been trying to throw Sebastian a birthday party for years and he always refused. She knew he wouldn't be able to refuse if there was another reason for the party besides him. I told her I'd host, as it seemed I had the best place for it and Luna would be thrilled to meet everyone.
The day of the party, there was a knock at my door around eight that morning. I opened the door to find Abigail standing on my front porch, arms full of shiny birthday decorations: streamers, balloons, and strung up letters that spelled out 'happy birthday'.
"I may have gone a little overboard." Abigail said as she stepped through the doorway, rushing towards the kitchen table to set everything down. "I've just always wanted to throw a party," Abigail admitted with a sigh as she stared down at the decorations scattered across the table. "And Seb can't say no if you're involved." She looked up at me and smiled, nudging my arm with her elbow.
Abigail had eventually accepted my relationship with Sebastian, and part of me thinks she's relieved it happened. I don't doubt that she enjoyed flirting with him on occasion, but her guilt of leading him on had eventually caught up with her after she saw what I had done to Sam. She realized she had been doing the same to Sebastian—simply leading him towards a dead end.
Abigail and I spent a few hours decorating and catching up, since we hadn't spoken in weeks. She told me all about her college course she had been taking online, and I admittedly didn't have a whole lot to share back. The last two years of my life had been a whirlwind. It felt like things had finally settled and the simple farm life that grandpa had always had was mine now.
After a few hours of decorating and Luna protesting because no one was giving her any attention, there was another knock on the door. Guests must be starting to arrive, I suppose.
"I'll get it." Abigail said, with a very content Luna scooped up in her arms. She carried Luna to the door, and opened it to reveal a smiling Sam standing on the other side. I watched as Abigail grew stiff, her hand that had been petting Luna's head stopped. "What are you doing here?!" Abigail said with great urgency in her tone.
Sam didn't respond; he simply cocked his head to the side and one eyebrow rising in confusion.
Abigail was quiet as well as she stared at him for a moment longer before she spoke again. "You're supposed to go get Seb? And bring him to the party?" She said slowly, reminding him of his one, very important job.
Sam's expression quickly melted into one of stark realization as his eyes grew wide and his mouth dropped slightly open. "Oh, shit." He cursed, mentally punishing himself for forgetting. "Uh, I'll be back!" Sam said nervously and I watched as he jumped over the two steps leading down off the front porch, his feet slamming into the dirt below and kicking up a cloud of dust before he started running towards the north entrance of the farm to go get Sebastian.
I watched Abigail shake her head slightly, the purple curls at her back swinging back and forth as she closed the door. Luna was growing agitated and wriggled her way out of Abigail's arms, jumping to the floor and landing with a soft thud as her paws hit the wood floor.
"You didn't tell Seb about this, did you..." I guessed as Abigail began walking back towards me.
She sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "You know as well as I do that he wouldn't have shown up willingly if he knew we were throwing a party for him." She paused, pulling the chair out from the kitchen table and sitting herself down. "But we also know that he won't throw a tantrum and storm out if he knows the party is for both of you and not just him."
