My conversation with Shane got me thinking about how much of a burden I'd become on my friends, and quite frankly, this whole town. I'd come in like a tornado, leaving destruction in my wake as I tore apart the fragile ecosystem of Pelican Town with my problems and my secrets.
I wanted to call Abigail and apologize; plead for my second chance to make things right. I'd fucked up the first time, badly. I couldn't fail again. I wouldn't let myself. Maybe if she just listened to me long enough, I could at least tell her I was sorry.
I pressed Abigail's name on my cell phone screen and held the phone up to my ear, only for the line to ring one single time and go straight to voicemail. She was either screening my calls, or she'd blocked me. There was only one other option: I could call Pierre's store landline and just hope and pray he could get her to talk to me.
I walked over to where the landline phone sat that grandpa had never gotten rid of. I'd only made and received a handful of calls on this phone in the last year and a half, most of those calls being from Lewis, but the one I distinctly remembered was when Abigail called me for the very first time and asked me if we could talk. Now it was my turn. My fingers trembled as I dialed the number. I was anxious about what she would say to me, if she'd even speak to me at all. I listened as the line rang, and then suddenly the ringing stopped as I heard the distinct sound of someone picking up the phone on the other end. The voice that came through wasn't Pierre's.
"Pierre's General Store, this is Abigail, how can I help you?" Abigail's tone sounded bored, annoyed, and monotone. Her father had probably asked her to answer the phone because he was in the middle of something and I could practically hear the eye roll she must've given him in her voice.
"Please don't hang up." I said, the words coming out of my mouth as fast as they could, like the recognition of my voice would cause her to immediately slam the phone down out of anger. "It's Stella." I told her. "Please," I begged again. "Don't hang up."
The line was quiet for a moment but I knew she was still there because I could faintly hear her breathing on the other end.
"What do you want?" She barked out, sounding disgusted by the sound of my voice.
My hand gripped the phone a little tighter as my palm grew sweaty from the anxiety and adrenaline coursing through me. What did I want? I supposed the reason I'd called was to beg for her forgiveness, but what was the likelihood of that happening? I could easily just hang up, pack my belongings, sell the farmhouse, and leave again. Abigail and Sam would never forgive me for as long as I lived, so what was the point of even trying to beg for forgiveness that would never be granted?
"I want my best friend back." I said firmly, though my throat grew tight as tears threatened to spill out over my cheeks.
I could hear her scoff on the other end. "You better look somewhere else, then."
"Wait!" I shouted, hoping she heard me. "Please, Abby. Don't hang up on me." I begged again.
"Do you even understand what you did, Stella?" She quickly shot back.
I stood there with the phone pressed to my ear, stunned silent for a moment before I tried to speak. "I—"
"It's less about me and more about Sam, but what you did is inexcusable—unforgivable." She said, cutting me off. "I told you. I warned you. And you lied to my face like you've been doing since the day you came back. How could you ever expect me to accept your friendship again? Especially after you ruined mine."
"I only lied to you about my father because I wasn't ready to tell you about how horrific the truth was." I admitted. And she still didn't even know half the whole truth yet. "And... and Sebastian and I lied about our relationship because... well..." I struggled to say it out loud, but I knew I had to. I knew I had to admit what I'd always known all along. "Because you were right. I am a big, fat coward and I always have been. I never changed; it was just the situations we found ourselves in that did."
