The next day
[Tyler woke up, and his mom told him that she would take care of it, he got dressed, and they both walked out and went home. She called Bill Forbes and tried to talk to him, but he told her not to have a guilty conscience because they were monsters, not humans. He called Sheriff Forbes and told her that Caroline would be staying with him for a few days. Damon got a call from Katherine, and after a while of pointless conversation, she told him that he and Klaus were in Chicago. The next day, Damon went early to the Gilbert home, sneaked in through Elena's window, and lay in her bed beside her]

[Elena got dressed, had breakfast, told her parents and Victoria where she was going, and then got in Damon's car. Caroline's dad asked her how she was able to walk in the sun, and after she told him, he tortured her by taking away her daylight ring and opening up the blinds to a window in the cell that he was keeping her in, which burned her. Elena and Damon arrived in Chicago after a few hours of traveling, he showed her Stefan's apartment, and then showed Elena the list of names of Stefan's victims, which was behind a secret shelf. Elena was shocked at how many names were written on the wall, but she didn't want to judge him, and then she asked Damon what he was doing in the 1920s. He told her that he was around but he could avoid Stefan and indulge in a few Daisy Buchanans of his own, which made Elena annoyed and disgusted. Damon told Elena to stay in the apartment to make a plan while he went to look for Stefan. Gloria, a witch from the 1920s told Klaus to bring him Rebekah because she needed something that she had to figure out what was the problem with Klaus' hybrids. Sheriff Forbes had come home after a few all-nighters at the office, called Caroline so that they could go to lunch together, and then Tyler went to see Sheriff Forbes to tell her about Caroline, Carol, and Caroline's father. Stefan discovered that he knew Klaus back in the 1920s along with his sister, Rebekah. They went to where Klaus kept his family's coffins, he removed the dagger from Rebekah and then told him more of their story from the 1920s. After a little while, Klaus said that they would be going to their old apartment. Damon went to see Gloria and asked about Stefan, she told him that he was with Klaus and that they would be coming back that night because they were doing an errand for her. Damon tried to get the information out of her, but she didn't tell him anything, and Damon went to buy a dress for Elena. Elena kept reading Stefan's diary and discovered that he hadn't started to get better at starting to control his cravings until 1935. She heard Klaus' voice and hid in the secret compartment. Klaus opened up the secret shelf, Stefan went to go see it, and he found Elena hiding there. For a second, she thought that Stefan would turn her into Klaus when he said out loud, "Look what I found". However, Stefan took out a bottle of 1918 single mat and then left with Klaus after closing the secret shelf. After Elena was sure that they had gone, Elena called Damon and got a syringe of vervain out just in case Klaus and Stefan came back. Damon arrived an hour later, asked if she was okay, which she confirmed that she was, and then told her to get dressed]
{In Gloria's Bar}
[Klaus told Stefan the rest of the story, Damon went inside the bar secretly and signaled Stefan to come outside with a nod of his head. Stefan went outside after giving Klaus the excuse that he needed a real drink]
{With Caroline}

(Tyler took Caroline upstairs, Sheriff Forbes followed them, and then they left Bill's house)
{Outside Gloria's Bar}
[Stefan told Damon that he needed to get Elena out of there because she was the key as to why Klaus' hybrids weren't working because Elena was supposed to die in the sacrifice and she didn't. He told Damon that Klaus' witch was about to figure it out and he also told him to tell Elena to go home and forget about him. Damon told him to tell her himself and he went inside the bar to distract Klaus]
Stefan: You shouldn't be here
Elena: Where else would I be?
Stefan: What do you want? Damon won't be able to distract Klaus for long
Elena: I want you to come home
[She hugged him and got ready to stab him in the back with a vervain syringe. Stefan knew what she was going to do, moved out of the way, and grabbed her arm tightly making her groan in pain]
Stefan: How much clearer can I make it? I don't want to come home
(He pushed her arm away)
{In Gloria's Bar}
[Gloria stopped Klaus from killing Damon because she didn't want a scene in her bar and told the both of them to take it outside]
{Outside Gloria's Bar}
Stefan: Klaus is obsessed with siring these hybrids. The second he knows you're alive, he'll figure out why it's not working
Elena: I know you're trying to protect me, but I can't let you do it. Come back with us, please
Stefan: And what do you expect if I do? Huh? It's never going to be the same, Elena
Elena: I know that
Stefan: I don't think you do, I've left bodies scattered from Florida to Tennessee, innocent people, humans.
Elena: Lexie found you like this before, in the 20s, and-and she saved you
Stefan: And you know what I did after that? I spent thirty years trying to pull myself together and to a vampire that's nothing, but to you? That's half your life
Elena: I can't give up on you, Stefan, I won't
Stefan: Yes you can and you will. It's done, that part of my life is done, I don't wanna see you, I don't wanna be with you, I just want you to leave
(Stefan walked away from her, Damon came out of the bar, and they both got in his car)
Damon: You okay?
Elena: Just drive
(He drove them away)
{With Caroline and Sheriff Forbes}
[Caroline showered, her mother gave her a blood bag, she finished it slowly, and let Tyler be alone with her. He laid down beside her, they cuddled, and he let her cry into his chest]
{With Klaus}
[Rebekah stabbed him knowing it wouldn't kill him but at the very least hurt him. He took the dagger out, put it on the floor, and he had Stefan come forward. Rebekah was happy to see him, Klaus made Stefan remember everything, then filled Rebekah in, and Rebekah freaked out when she didn't have her necklace around her neck]

The next day
[It was now August 4th, 2010, Enzo had gone back to London, and Bonnie was back. Katherine wanted to know what Stefan was planning because he wasn't the diabolical kind, but he didn't tell her anything. Damon helped the family cook the chili and then left because Sheriff Forbes called him for a favor. Bonnie and Caroline went to the Gilbert house and the girls were so happy to see Bonnie. Gloria held Rebekah's hand to try to find the necklace]
{In the kitchen of The Gilbert Home}
Bonnie: The problem with my dad's normal side of the family is normal made for a really boring summer
Caroline: After the last few days, I would kill for a normal family. Since when did you learn how to cook?
Victoria: She hasn't, Damon helped us
Bonnie: Damon's helping you guys cook now?
Annabelle: Don't start
Elena: Yeah, both of you stop judging, he's just trying to be a good-Ah!
Caroline: Did I splash you?
Elena: No, my necklace
(Her necklace had burned her and Elena pulled it from her chest)
Elena: It burned me
Caroline: Maybe it's a sign you shouldn't be wearing it
(Elena took it off)
Victoria, Bonnie & Annabelle: Caroline
Caroline: What? I'm just saying
(She looked at Elena)
Caroline: You know, if you're gonna be cooking without Stefan
[Elena rolled her eyes and sighed. She gave it to Bonnie when she asked to see it, but it shocked Bonnie, and Elena dropped it on the table with a gasp. Later on, they went to the Lockwood party. Gloria told them that she needed time and space and Stefan convinced Klaus to agree to Gloria's demands by accompanying him to go feed. They all left Gloria alone and went to feed on innocent girls]
{At The Lockwood Potluck Party}
Caroline: So, you're not switching Salvatores, are you?
Victoria, Bonnie & Annabelle: Caroline
Caroline: Bonnie, stay focused, as your friend who worries about you daily, what is your deal with you and Damon? Do you still have feelings for him?
Elena: Nothing is going on between Damon and me. He's been just as focused on finding Stefan as I have
Caroline: Yeah, but that doesn't make him any less Damon
Victoria: Stop it
Annabelle: Seriously, cut it out, nosy
Caroline: Hey
Annabelle: Well, it's the truth
Caroline: I'm just saying, if my own father who I love, dearly, can't change me, no one is changing Damon
Victoria: That is a fair point as well
Elena: Can we stop talking about this?
[Bonnie interrupted them and they all saw that the necklace was floating. Annabelle asked her what she was doing but she told her that she wasn't doing anything and that the necklace had magic of its own]
{With Damon}
[Alaric told Damon to take a beat with Elena because he thought it was a bad idea that they were flirting and giggling together. However, Damon told him that it wasn't his problem, Alaric told him that he was just trying to protect her too, and Sheriff Forbes grabbed Damon for a council meeting]
{With Stefan}
[He went to see Gloria and he refused to tell her anything, but Gloria tortured him into seeing why Klaus couldn't make hybrids, and she figured out everything. Before Gloria could continue her torture of Stefan, Katherine arrived, killed, Gloria, and she freed Stefan. He ended up telling Katherine that back in the 20s, Klaus and Rebekah were running from someone, but didn't tell her anything else. Stefan covered Gloria's body and took it away to bury it. Once he did, he went to the warehouse and before he could open up a casket, Rebekah arrived. They talked, he asked her about Mikael, she kissed him, and then she knew that his allegiance was somewhere else. She told Klaus, Klaus broke Stefan's neck, and together with Rebekah, they moved everything into the moving truck, and compelled the driver to take them to Mystic Falls]
{In The Lockwood Mansion}
<after the meeting>
[It was nighttime and Sheriff Forbes, Carol, and Damon discovered that Damon's compulsion on Bill hadn't worked. Damon went to talk to Elena and Alaric since he was taking her home, and when Alaric tried to stop him from going to kill Bill, Damon saw the ring on his finger, snapped his neck, and went after Bill. Elena was mad at Damon for what he had just done and called Caroline, who was with Tyler about to sleep with him in his bedroom, to tell her she needed her help to hide Alaric's body while he woke up. Caroline raced to where Elena was, she moved Alaric's body into the bushes, and Elena warned her about Damon and her dad. Caroline raced back inside the house to hear where Damon and her dad were]
