Chapter 40

[It was a new school year, August 10, 2010, Lola was still on tour, prank night had gone perfectly well, the teachers had to clean everything up, and the students were now high school seniors. Stefan had brought college girls into the boarding house to feed on, Rebekah had invited herself into the boarding house because Klaus had left her in Mystic Falls, and Alaric and Victoria agreed to train Elena to fight. Victoria's senior classes were Acting 3, AP English Literature, AP Songwriting, AP American History, Pre-Calculus, AP Environmental Science, and AP Spanish Literature. Elena's classes were AP American History, AP English Language, Pre-Calculus, AP Environmental Science, AP Spanish Literature, study hall, and creative writing. Damon let Elena know that Rebekah was living with them and that she might not want to go over the house for a while. He refused to tell her anything about Stefan even though she asked because he knew she wouldn't like it. Rebekah was trying to take over Caroline's role of being the most popular girl in school. Katherine tried all kinds of human blood to get Mikael to wake up but nothing had worked. After school at 2:33 pm, Elena went to run at the school's track, Stefan ran up to her, asked her if she was going to the bonfire, and also asked her if she was bringing someone. She tried to ignore him and kept jogging, she bumped into another classmate. Stefan pushed him to the ground, his friend helped him up, and when she asked Stefan angrily who he was, he simply said that he was the guy who was assigned to protect a human blood bag. Elena walked away angrily and offended and she texted Damon to come meet her in Alaric's apartment]
{In Alaric's apartment}
(Elena kept warming up and then she started to do bench presses)
<after a little while>

Damon: And you can bet that I'll protect Tori if anything tries to hurt her for bait
Elena: Thank you
Damon: You're welcome
Elena: What took you so long?
Damon: I may have been busy cleaning the Persian rug from my stairs
Elena: Stefan's been feeding on innocent girls, right? Tell me the truth
Damon: Yeah, college girls, I got three of them out, he killed two of them
Elena: Oh my God
Damon: That's why I didn't want to tell you
Elena: No, I needed to know, tonight's the bonfire, let's all meet up in Ric's classroom and make a plan to help Stefan
Damon: Alright
Elena: See you then, don't be late
Damon: We'll see
Elena: Damon
Damon: Relax, I'm joking
(They left)
[Elena went home, took a shower, and got started on her homework. Later on, Elena, Jeremy, and Annabelle get ready for the bonfire. Victoria went to The Gorilla Club with Andre, Caterina, and Beckett, so she could learn about being even riskier and nailing an audition for a movie role she was offered. It was a movie about a teenage girl who got sent to a home for troubled teenagers that was being filmed in Virginia Beach by SBI Studious. The others met up in Alaric's classroom and created a plan, but they discovered that Tyler was sired to Klaus, and Damon vervained him]
{In the falls in the bonfire}
[Elena was drinking with her friends and then Damon went to flirt with Rebekah as they all had planned]
***PRETEND ELENA WAS WEARING HER HEART NECKLACE***

[She went to the school's bleachers and pretended to be extra drunk to mess with Stefan. In the end, Rebekah stabbed Damon in the stomach with the stick, and Alaric tried to shoot Stefan with vervain tranquilizer darts, but he was only able to shoot him twice, which weakened him, but did not bring him down. Stefan zoomed at Alaric, took away his gun, and he ended up breaking it. Later on, everyone returned home and Elena stopped at the boarding house]
{In Damon's room}
Elena: You played your part of the plan really well tonight
Damon: Oh yeah?
Elena: Yeah, you had Rebekah drooling all over you and your marshmallows
Damon: Hmm, yeah, before she skewered me, I thought you were too drunk to notice
Elena: I was faking most of it
Damon: So was I
(They looked into each other's eyes and then Alaric came around the corner)
Alaric: Ready to get going, Elena?
(Damon rolled his eyes)
Elena: In a minute, Ric
Damon: Great job tonight, man
[Alaric walked out, Damon went to his bathroom, turned on the water, and then went back to sitting on the bed with Elena]
Elena: What?
Damon: I called Lexie, she should be able to get here on Saturday
Elena: That's great
Damon: Yeah, well, I do have great ideas from time to time
(Elena laughed and elbowed him gently in his ribs)
Elena: I'll see you tomorrow
Damon: Yes, you will
(Elena got off of the bed, walked out, and Damon went to turn off the faucet)
{Downstairs}
Elena: You know, it's okay if you wanna be friends with Damon again, I am
Alaric: I don't
Elena: I think he kinda misses you
Stefan: You almost got me tonight, I definitely wasn't expecting that tonight
Alaric: Well, that was the point
Stefan: Yeah, you can hate it all you want, but Elena needs me
Elena: No, I don't
Stefan: I'll always protect her
Elena: I don't need your protection
Stefan: I think you're both better off having me around
Elena: Let's just go
Stefan: Elena, wait, you tried to trap me to get me to turn on my humanity didn't you?
Elena: Yes
Stefan: Why?
Elena: Because I still have hope
Stefan: After everything I've done, you still think I'll be able to find my humanity?
Elena: Yes I do, and I'm not giving up
Stefan: Elena, do you know how pathetic that makes you?
Elena: No, Stefan, it makes me strong
[She staked him in the abdomen with her forearm weapon making him gasp. She took it off, gave it back to Alaric, and then walked out the front door]

Saturday
{At the Night of Illumination Celebration with Stefan}
(He saw Alexia in the reflection of a car window and turned around)
Stefan: Lexi
Alexia: Hi
Stefan: What are you doing here?
Alexia: I'm here because you're off the rails, big time
Stefan: You need to leave me alone, okay?
(He tried to leave but Alexia pulled him back)
Alexia: Now, what kind of friend would I be if I didn't help you out of this mess you're in
Stefan: I don't want your help
(He tried to leave again but Alexia pulled him back again)
Alexia: You know you say that every time, "I don't want your help, I don't wanna get better, leave me alone"
Stefan: Well, maybe you should listen this time
Alexia: Or maybe I should do this
[She smashed his head on the window of the car, cracking the window, and Stefan fell on the ground unconscious. Damon drove up, Elena and Victoria came out of a corner, Damon got out, and opened the back door]
Victoria: Did you have to hit him so hard?
Alexia: Eh, he'll live, let's go
[Alexia and Damon picked him up and put him in the backseat. She got in the front seat and Damon got back in the driver's seat while Elena went in the backseat as well]
Alexia: See you later, Tori, good luck in your movie
Victoria: Thanks, see you around
(Damon drove away)
[They put him where Bill kept Caroline last time, chained him up, and then Damon went back to the town]
{In The Grill}
(He saw Damon going up to him when he came in)
Alaric: You know, I've had enough vampires today, thanks, and it's only noon
Damon: Oh, c'mon, have a drink with me, we've got trouble
Alaric: No, you've got trouble. See, we're not a team, you tried to kill me, alright? We're not friends, I don't like you anymore
Damon: Look, if Mason Lockwood could get over the fact that I tried to kill him and I tortured him, can't you cut me some slack, Ric
Alaric: I shouldn't have to get over it, I was your friend, Damon, you should've done it in the first place
Damon: Well, sometimes...I do things I don't have to do
Alaric: You're gonna recycle the same crap-ass apology you gave Mason Lockwood?
Damon: How do you know about that?
Alaric: I was dating Jenna, there are no secrets in the Gilbert family, and who do you think told me?
Damon: I gotta super glue Tori's mouth shut
(Alaric rolled his eyes)
Alaric: I do like my bourbon
Damon: See, that's why we're friends
Alaric: Ah, shut up
(They went to the bar and Damon told Alaric what happened with Katherine and Mikael)
Alaric: We could check the old Lockwood cellar and see what we find there since the Lockwoods are the most mysterious founding family
Damon: Sounds good to me, see you there tonight
Alaric: Fine, though, you should tell Grayson and Miranda what happened with Mikael
Damon: I did, Grayson told me he was gonna kick my ass, Miranda threw multiple high-heeled shoes at me and cussed me out in English and Spanish
Alaric: Well deserved
Damon: Just meet me at the old Lockwood cellar
(He left)
{With Alexia and Elena}
(Alexia opened the door and they went inside)
Alexia: Klaus really did a number on him, huh?
Elena: He compelled him to turn off his humanity
Alexia: Well, we're just gonna have to convince him to turn it back on. I have to warn you, it's not gonna be pretty
Elena: I can handle it
(Alexia nodded and kicked Stefan's foot)
Lexie: Wake up, sleepyhead
(Stefan woke up)
Alexia: how are you feeling?
(Stefan chuckled)
Stefan: What is this? Let me out of here
Alexia: Shh, inside voices, please, I'm trying to get inside your head. You heard the not pretty part?
Elena: I heard you
[Alexia got in Stefan's head and started to dry him out. Stefan started hallucinating months without blood starting with three, nine, two years, and then five years. Alexia continued and then it was eight years, eleven, and sixteen. She started to stab him with a stake making him scream in pain, Stefan tried to get Elena to free him, but she refused, and Alexia told her that she wouldn't be able to stay there for long since she and her boyfriend had a meeting with a home realtor in L.A. in the afternoon, but that she would stay as long as possible. Elena walked out because she didn't want to see Stefan in pain and Alexia continued her job for the night. Alaric and Damon explored the caves, Damon got injured but Alaric removed the giant stakes from his body, and they kept going deeper into the caves. Damon couldn't continue through since he was a vampire and Alaric kept going, he found a lot of ancient hieroglyphics and Viking names. He got out and told Damon that they should return with Elena tomorrow morning. He agreed and they both left to go back to their homes]
