The day had been long, the hours at work stretching endlessly as Y/N tried to focus on her tasks. But no matter how much she tried to immerse herself in her job, her mind kept drifting back to the morning, to the way Jeongguk had barely acknowledged her as she handed him the lunch bag. She had seen the look on his face—impassive, indifferent. It was a look that had become all too familiar since their wedding day, a look that seemed to freeze the warmth between them, leaving only an unbearable chill.
As Y/N stepped into the house, the familiar comfort of their home did little to ease the tightness in her chest. The silence that greeted her was heavy, oppressive, a stark contrast to the lively conversations they used to share during their brief courtship. She dropped her bag on the hallway table, took a deep breath, and made her way to the kitchen. Cooking had become her solace, a way to distract herself from the growing distance between them. Even though she knew Jeongguk might not touch the food she prepared, she still did it every day, holding on to the hope that maybe, just maybe, things would go back to the way they were.
She began preparing dinner, her movements automatic, practiced. As she chopped vegetables and stirred the pot, her mind wandered back to the moment she had handed over the lunch bag to Jackson, Jeongguk's chief security guard. Jackson had taken it with a polite smile, but Y/N had seen the flicker of pity in his eyes. He knew, just as she did, that Jeongguk would likely throw it away without a second glance. The thought made her heart squeeze painfully, and she had to blink back tears as she added seasoning to the pot.
What had gone wrong? she wondered for the thousandth time. Where had the loving, caring man she had married gone? During their brief courtship, Jeongguk had been everything she had ever dreamed of—kind, attentive, and so full of life. They had shared laughter, and whispered promises of a future filled with love and happiness. But something had changed after the wedding, something that Y/N couldn't understand. The warmth in his eyes had dimmed, replaced by a coldness that cut deeper than any words ever could.
Had she done something wrong? Had she unknowingly offended him, pushed him away? These questions plagued her, but no matter how much she searched her memory, she couldn't find an answer. All she knew was that the man she loved was slipping away from her, and she was powerless to stop it.
The sound of the front door opening snapped Y/N out of her thoughts. She wiped her hands on a towel, her heart leaping into her throat as she heard Jeongguk's footsteps approaching. When he walked into the kitchen, she forced a smile, trying to hide the pain that threatened to overwhelm her.
"You're early today," she said softly, her voice betraying none of the turmoil inside her.
Jeongguk didn't meet her eyes. "Yeah," he muttered, barely acknowledging her as he walked past, a food packet clutched in his hand.
The sight of the packet made Y/N's heart sink. Of course. He had bought dinner for himself. The food she had painstakingly prepared would go untouched, just like the lunch she had made that morning. Disappointment washed over her, but she quickly pushed it down, refusing to let it show. Instead, she nodded, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I'll call you down when dinner's ready."
Jeongguk only hummed in response, not even bothering to look back as he made his way upstairs. Y/N watched him go, her heart heavy with the weight of unshed tears. She stood there for a moment, rooted to the spot, until the sound of his footsteps faded away.
With a heavy sigh, Y/N turned back to the stove. She finished preparing dinner, her hands moving mechanically as her mind swirled with unanswered questions. Why had Jeongguk changed so much? What had happened between their wedding day and now that had turned him so cold, so distant? She couldn't understand it, and the more she thought about it, the more helpless she felt.
