Saying Hello

Hellos are difficult. When I walk into work, I have to walk past the valet parking employees which are usually 2 guys in their mid-20s who have had a social life for most of their lives. It's unfair for them to say hello to me because I have only ever had meaningful conversation with 7 people. When I walk in, they automatically greet me. It's hard to think of a response when you keep on walking, but that's what I do. Let me walk you through a couple situations.

"Sup?"

"Good! You?"

"Hey man! How's it going?"

"Hi." That's it. That's all I said.

If those two responses were reversed, we'd have no problem. I start out friendships awkwardly, and it's completely my fault! It probably the thing giving me the most anxiety in my life. When I look back, I laugh, but in the moment it's uncomfortable and nerve racking. If friendships started a couple months ahead, there wouldn't be a problem with saying hello in a fast paced scenario. Just give me a raised hand. It's a universal hello, and there's no way for me to mess up. I'll do the same.
