Salome-

"Checkmate!"

She drags the jelly beans to her basket.

"No! You cheated! Again!" Rey fox the board. "No way am I losing to a child!"

"Give it up; the kid beat you ten times; she has a full month's supply of jelly beans."

Salome grinned.

She has been spending the last 48 hours playing board games or sleeping. Rey would go out and get food.

The boat did move to a new location.

"Hello?" The other man, nicknamed Rex, kept getting updates about the attacks on the clans.

There is no reason to attack; they had Veronica. So why?

"Why are you attacking if you have Veronica?" She moved the red checker piece across the board.

"Someone named Russell wanted a distraction; I believe he needs time to sneak your mother out of Ancestors."

Salome wrinkles her nose. "It's Mommy's perverted brother."

Salome remembers that man coming to the house and trying to touch her Mommy's butt. She doesn't want her mommy to leave. She hopes her daddy saves her, like in the books.

She smiled. "Daddy will save Mommy."

"Checkmate!"

Rey bangs his head on the table and ruffles his hair. "I give up."

Salome smiled.

She sat on the couch and enjoyed the jelly beans.

At around seven, Rex stepped outside for a bit. He needed to make private phone calls.

And it was around nine when he came back, injured. He was holding his side and closed the door, pushing a bookshelf against it.

"Drive!!"

Rey didn't argue or ask questions. He approached the wheel and began to drive away on the boat. Salome peeked out the window and saw men with weapons coming their way.

She wasn't sure what was happening, but those men had come to kill.

Rex opens a cupboard and grabs an aid kit. He sat on the kitchen chair and removed his shirt.

Salome gasp. The man had more scars than her daddy.

She got closer and looked at his back. He had tattoos. "What happened here?"

"Gunshot."

"Here?"

"Knife wound."

"And here?"

"A wolf took a bite out of me."

She kept asking, and he kept answering.

"Alright, kids, enough."

"But I distracted you, didn't I?" She smiled.

"I suppose," he sighed.

She frowned. "Who are those people?"

Rey groaned. "What's going on?"

"They came for the kid," Rex said. "And they're not from your clan; they are hunters. They were giving orders to get Salome and take her to the church."

Salome huff. "I don't do churches; our religion is Ancient Law."

"Huh?" Rey looked perplexed.

"God's? Goddess? Demons? Angels?"
