Ch. 46 - FIRE! ... or not ...

After a long shift at the fire department, Ace was ready to fall down into bed and sleep the night away. But ofcourse those were far away dreams as his beeper went off and he got notice of a fire in the apartment complex next to his own house.
Being this close to him, he was at the scene before anyone else and was quickly able to rescue the single blond from his apartment that was engulfed in flames.
Only... it seemed that... his rescue hadn't been needed...
Because who would need a rescue from a fire, if there was no fire?

Just as Ace was getting ready for a well-deserved rest after a long shift, just accepting a soda from his twin, did his beeper go off.

"Are you fucking kidding me."

"You just pulled a 12-hour shift, Ace. They can't expect you to go..." Sabo said with a frown as his brother fought to get the pager from his pocket.

"They would understand if I was already asleep-fuck!" Ace was up and running for his spare gear he kept at home instead of out and to his motorcycle which had Sabo look weird.

"Ace??? Why are you getting dressed here if you're going? Shouldn't you go to the station?? And didn't you say they would understand if you didn't go? Just tell them you went straight to bed." It's not that he didn't understand the pager meant something was on fire, but no matter what, his brother's life was more important than any other. So sending him in when he would soon need a nap was dangerous.

"It's the apartment complex next to us!"

"What?!"

"Yea! 5th floor. Sabo, god-" Ace stopped as he put on his helmet. Fastening his boots as he hopped to the door. "I would tell you to go to Luffy's but I know you won't. So please, close all the windows, stay inside but go to our room and keep an eye on the building. For the love of god, if you see any flames coming out the building or smoke piling out, I want you to go away further from this place, okay? Take the car or run down the street."

"But you-"

"I'll be doing my job and I'm protected, you're not. And I do not need that building to collapse onto my brother, him choking on smoke or getting burned if the fire jumps over. So just do it, please!"

"O-okay, I promise."

"Good, and take you phone so I can call you when It's over!" Ace called out before he was running out, arriving at the scene in literally less then 5 minutes, searching out the apartment from outside and indeed seeing a room on the fifth floor whose window was tinted yellow in collar from flames inside.

Cursing he ran for the fire escape the outside of the building had and pulled it down, making his way up hurriedly. If the fire was already illuminating the window that much it was a big one or close to the outside which meant it could crawl to other spaces through the outside quick. Both not good.

As he was making up his way, he used his radio to communicate he was already there and making his way up.

"Firefighter Portgas D. Ace on the scene. Fire spotted on the 5th floor, 3rd room from the right. Making my way up through the fire-escape. Will trigger the fire-alarm for the building to start evacuations."

-Roger that.- His l ieutenant's voice echoed back quickly , -We'll be there in 4 minutes with fire-engine 3, engine 2 following in 6 minutes and engine 9 is ready on stand-by.-
