(track: "From Past to Present" by Jeremy Soule)

The small soft hands of a six year old girl scribble with her favorite blue crayon before taking another bite of cereal, her feet gently swinging back and forth under the chair's seat. Her eyes glance up at her mother's at the head of the square kitchen table as the morning light shines through the paper snowflakes that hang against the window, the first of their Christmas decorations for the season as the rest still lie in the boxes in the hall.

Her mother looks back at her with a comforting smile, unaware that little Daisy does notice the redness around her mother's eyes from past crying, as she often wakes up doing these days.

But Daisy goes back to her drawing and her breakfast.

"Have you written your letter to Santa yet?" her mother asks her to break the silence.

Daisy's eyes go to her letter, all that's written on it being the crudely drawn "Dear Santa" as she couldn't figure out what she wanted to ask for. "Not yet," she replies.

"Well it's only three weeks until Christmas. You need to decide soon," she responds before standing up. "Are you finished?" she adds, asking about the girl's bowl of soggy leftover cereal.

She nods but then thinks of something. "Can I go with you to the hospital today?"

Her mother hesitates as Daisy had been going with her every time and when she didn't she went with her father. The girl is practically living there at this point. But she can't ever say no to such a sincere request. "Of course, hun. Go pack your things."

She hops off the chair to do just that, shoving the Santa letter in her backpack too to hopefully finish it there.

her outside the room about something. She isn't sure if it's good or bad. She hopes not bad. Daisy's eyes go back to her eleven year old sister who is asleep in her hospital bed, her skin pale and head still completely shaved, those funny little tubes attached to her nose. She wants her to wake so they can watch a movie together or maybe play a game but of course her father said she needs her rest.

After her mother comes back inside the room, she's crying again, holding a tissue to her face to hide it as she comes to sit in the chair by the bed again, attempting to recompose herself. But she reaches out to take Amelia's sleeping hand in hers, a look of devastation in her eyes that only makes Daisy even more sad...

She looks over at her letter then... and decides what she will write.

Daisy's boots run over the newly fallen snow to the mailbox with her letter now stamped and sealed. She reaches high on her toes to open it up, slipping the red envelope inside and shutting it again before raising the flag.
