Megan
"Are you okay?" Annabeth asked me.
I shut my locker and nodded.
"Megan," she warned.
"I can't help but feel like something is going to happen," I finally admitted.
It was the last day of school before spring break. Lunch and three classes were all that remained between me and no school. I could get through the last few hours, I told myself. It was going to be a breeze.
"Are you sure that's not your anxiety speaking?" she questioned as we fell into step and walked towards the cafeteria.
"I don't know," I answered. "I've been having this feeling all day. Maybe it's just a lack of sleep."
"Have you not been sleeping well?" she questioned.
I shook my head, knowing she was going to be upset for not having said something earlier.
"Why haven't you said anything?" Annabeth demanded.
"I didn't want to worry you. You already have so much on your plate. Plus, it's not something you can really do anything about."
Annabeth sighed and looped her arm through mine as we got in line.
"I'm sorry you're still having trouble sleeping. And if there is anything I can do for you, you let me know, okay?" she reminded me.
I nodded, leaning in to her. "Thank you."
"Girl, don't even start with me. It's what best friends are for."
I laughed, knowing she was right. We got our food pretty quickly and went to our usual table. The boys still weren't there. I frowned in confusion. Where were they?
"Hey, you want any water?" Annabeth asked, drawing me out of my thoughts.
"Sure. Better you than me," I laughed, remembering the last time.
Annabeth laughed as she remembered too and walked away to get water. I looked around for Michael and Jared but didn't see them anywhere. The custodian caught my eye, and I looked over at him, remembering last week. I still felt bad about it. This time, he was hanging out in the kitchen, chatting with one of the cooks. It seemed like they kept him on standby in case accidents happened.
"Hey, where's Annie?" Michael's voice drew me out of my thoughts.
"She went to grab water," I answered as he sat down. "Where's Jared?"
"Teacher held him back after class. Hopefully he can get back in time for lunch," Michael answered. "Annie went so you didn't have a repeat of last time?"
I flicked a wrapper at him, making him laugh.
"How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Better," I answered honestly. "Pain is finally starting to go away."
Annabeth came back a moment later and joined us, wrinkling her nose at Michael's plate. He always had the oddest combination of food on his plate. We were always unsure how he managed it. It seemed like a skill at this point. Today, he had carrots and ranch along with turkey and gravy. I wasn't even sure that had been one of the offered options.
We fell into a light conversation for a few minutes before Jared finally joined us. He slid in next to me, kissing my cheek to greet me. I turned to look at him and noticed he looked annoyed.
"What's up?" I asked him.
"Stupid teacher held me back after class to talk about a paper," he grumbled. "Lunch is the worst time to do that."
