I awoke to the sound of muffled screaming. I didn't know what time it was, but it was still dark outside. I rolled over and squinted at the clock. It was two in the morning. I groaned and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. I then got out of bed, taking care not to awaken Michael.
I stepped out into the hallway and walked towards the sound of muffled screaming. I figured it wasn't coming from Daniel's room because if Alyssa was having a nightmare, he would be there to comfort her. That left one other person.
I quickened my pace.
I reached her room and opened the door. Megan was thrashing around in her bed. I quietly shut the door behind me.
Megan turned so the pillow muffled her next scream. She screamed loudly and thrashed some more. I strode over to her bed quickly. The sight of her suffering was doing something to me.
"Megan, get up," I said while gently shaking her.
"No," she gasped, still asleep.
"Megan!" I said urgently.
"No!" she shouted, her eyes flying open.
Megan shot up and looked around her room. When she spotted me, Megan look startled, but began to calm down. She was panting and slightly sweaty. It must have been one bad nightmare.
"It's okay, I told her. "You're safe."
"What- what happened? It was so horrible," she whispered.
"I heard you screaming from my room and I woke up. When I realized you were probably having another nightmare, I came here," I explained.
"Thank you. For waking me up, I mean. I haven't had that dream in a long time. A few years, actually," she said, her eyebrows pinching together.
I felt my forehead crease. A few years? That didn't make sense.
Megan's mom had left her father when Megan was 11, and the accident happened three years later. Ever since the accident, Megan's nightmares had begun to happen more frequently. It was rare for her to sleep without any nightmares now. At least, that's what Daniel had told me.
"How many years?" I asked her.
"Three, I think. Huh. That's weird. I was fourteen the last time I had this nightmare. That was the time my memory was lost," she told me.
"What do you remember?" I asked, trying to keep my voice from shaking. "Before you lost your memory, I mean."
"I was being pursued by someone, I think, and a car accidentally hit me. I remember hitting my head and slipping into unconsciousness. That was the last thing I remember," she answered.
"Your nightmares began when you came back home, right?" I asked.
"Not exactly. I mean, I'd have them before, but after the accident, they were more frequent. The nightmare I had tonight was the same one I had when I woke up in the hospital with half of my memory gone," Megan explained. I closed my eyes.
