Chapter 8
Jared
"Rey, I'm home," I called out as I walked inside.
"In my room!" I heard her say.
I went to my room first and decided to find something to wear. I knew I'd most likely end up spending the night there because I usually did when Danny and I hung out and he was at his mom's. Those nights were when Megan wasn't home. I supposed tonight would be a change from that.
I grabbed a gray V neck and a pair of jeans. On my way to the bathroom, I got my towel and took my shirt and shorts off, throwing them in the hamper. It was a habit now, to keep things clean.
I stepped into the bathroom and tossed my clean clothes on the counter. I stripped down and stepped into the shower. I had to shower fast for two reasons: I had to talk to my sister, and I felt it important to see Megan again.
As I let the water run over my body and relax my muscles, I began to think about my childhood. Everything had been so easy. They only got better after I met Megan.
I still remembered when I first saw her, I had thought she was the prettiest girl I had ever seen. Megan had been wearing a blue dress with a flower in her hair. Megan's mom had loved to dress her like that. Megan could pass off any look.
We were both only six years old at the time; the first time we met was when I had been by the pond, feeding the ducks. Megan had asked me if she could feed the ducks too. I told her she could and after that day, we hung out every day and became best friends.
Everything was practically perfect. Megan and I grew up together, and I began to like her more. We were best friends and had given our first kiss to each other when we were 12. Megan and I weren't dating, not exactly, but we were inseparable.
Then came the accident.
It shattered both of our lives- Megan lost her memory and I lost my best friend. She had had a bad childhood, but after the accident, Megan had lost the past ten years of her life. She only remembered some things, and she was only 14 when everything happened.
I still blamed myself, even though no one else did, and had decided to leave Megan alone after her memory loss, but Danny and I still hung out. The only thing was we both kept our friendship hidden from Megan. Daniel didn't blame me for the accident, but he went along and kept the friendship a secret for me.
I pushed the thoughts out of my head, getting the last of the soap and shampoo. I stepped out of the shower and dried off, getting dressed. It didn't take me long.
I tossed my towel on the bed and grabbed a pair of socks and sneakers. I went for a gray pair today. I grabbed my phone and went to my sister's room, knocking on the door.
"Come in," I heard her call.
I went inside her room and saw she was on her laptop.
"Rey, I'm going over to Megan's. Danny's over tonight, so I might stay the night," I told her.
"Okay, that's fine. Is Megan out again?" she asked me.
"No."
"But you're going over..." she trailed off.
"Megan knows we're friends, but I don't think she remembers anything. She hasn't said anything," I explained.
"Jared, please be careful around her. You know what could happen if her memories come back too suddenly," my sister reminded me.
She worked with Megan's mom, and they were close.
"Reyna, I know. She told me herself. And don't worry about me. You should go spend some time with Travis. He is your fiancé," I pointed out.
Reyna was 25 and engaged to Travis Parker. Reyna was a nurse and Travis was a doctor, which meant they worked together, so when Reyna and Travis began to fall for each other, no one was surprised. Reyna was getting married in June, which was a few months away. She had her own apartment, but after getting engaged, Reyna had moved back in with us.
"I will. Try to come back a little early tomorrow. Around 12, at the latest, I would say. I need your help picking out some decorations," she told me.
"Fine," I groaned. "But only because Travis is out of town right now. When he comes back, you two are finishing the shopping."
"Thanks little bro. And don't worry; it'll be fun," she said enthusiastically.
"You owe me, Rey," I told her.
"I'll make it up to you tomorrow."
"How?"
"It's a surprise. For now, you should go. You don't want to keep anyone waiting," Reyna answered with a wink.
I playfully rolled my eyes at her and left, shutting the door behind me. I left downstairs and walked out the door, locking it.
I just hoped tonight would be fun.
