Jared

I pushed the food around my plate, wincing as I felt Daniel's glare burning a hole through my head, again.

"This is starting to sound like a habit," he spit out.

I looked up only to drop my gaze back to my plate. His glare was putting me a solid 12 feet under. I knew I deserved it, though.

"He won't be doing it again, will you, Jared?" Megan asked me.

I looked up to make eye contact with her. She kicked me under the table, making me jolt in surprise.

I nodded. "N-no, I won't be," I spoke.

"Daniel, your sister has forgiven him, why can't you?" their mom questioned.

"Oh, I didn't say he's forgiven," Megan clarified.

I widened my eyes in surprise.

"You walked away for the second time, and this time, I remember everything that had happened before I woke up in the hospital. This time calls for a butt kicking," she explained.

"What about our earlier conversation?" I asked, confused.

"I won't kick your ass into next week, but I will be kicking your butt for hurting me the way you did," Megan answered.

"Let me know if that offer extends to siblings," Daniel spoke, still glaring.

"I think you two are being a little too harsh," their mom tried defending.

"No, no," I spoke. "I think it's fair to be honest. I would have done the same thing if Reyna's fiancé pulled something like this more than once."

"Don't kiss ass. It's beneath you," Daniel retorted.

I winced, realizing how angry he really was.

"Why are you so mad at him? It's my heart he almost broke," Megan accused.

"He should know better by now," Daniel shot back.

I listened to the siblings bicker, knowing the chances of both of them ganging up on me were high.

"Okay," I finally interjected them. "Both of you get a go with me tomorrow in the ring. I'm sorry for what I did. I should not have walked away, and it was wrong of me. I get that now."

"You had better get that now," Daniel grumbled. "You're one of my closest friends, even if you do have a thing for my sister."

I pressed my lips together to prevent myself from laughing. I didn't think it would have been received well. Either sibling probably would have thrown something at me, though I thought the chances of Megan throwing a utensil was higher compared with Daniel.

"Seriously? That's what you're upset about?" Megan questioned her brother.

"Do you know how much it sucked having to sneak around when I wanted to hang out with Jared? I'm not trying to go back to that like he's my side chick or something," Daniel answered as though it should have been obvious.

I choked on the sip of water I had been attempting to swallow.

"Swallow, don't spit," Megan commented casually.

I started coughing violently as her mother and brother both chided her.

"What has gotten into you?" I asked her, shocked.

"What? You thought I was going to make it easy? All is not forgiven, no matter how cute I think you are," she retorted.

Daniel rolled his eyes, stabbing his food. Their mom suppressed a laugh as she took a bite of her food. I sunk in my seat, questioning my choice to attend dinner with the Stewarts tonight.
