Chapter 17

Megan

Zia pulled me into a hug, and we squeezed each other tightly. I couldn't believe I hadn't realized she was my sister. All the signs were there- I just hadn't read them.

"Um. What's going on here?" Jared interrupted us.

We pulled apart and looked at Jared. Luke had a small smile on his face as he pieced it together. I grinned as I realized we were all already friends.

"We know each other," Zia told him as she looped her arm through mine.

"Well, duh. But how?" Jared asked.

"We met each other a long time ago, actually, and became good friends over time. We just never really put it together that we were sisters. At least, I didn't," I added.

"That's pretty much all you need to know," Zia chimed in with a shrug.

"He definitely doesn't need to know the other stuff," I murmured in her ear.

Zia laughed aloud.

"Neither of them do," she told me in a quiet voice.

I laughed this time as the boys stared at us suspiciously.

"I don't like them speaking all... conspiracy-like," Luke spoke to Jared in a tone loud enough for all of us to hear.

I rolled my eyes at the two drama queens.

"We can hear you," I spoke in the same tone.

"Yeah?" Jared questioned as a strange look crossed his face.

"Yeah," I mocked him.

Suddenly, Jared charged me and I was looking at the world  upside down as he ran with me.

"Put me down!" I yelled as I was jostled.

"Be careful what you wish for!" he shouted back as I suddenly felt weightless.

I saw the sky as I fell back to earth, and my eyes widened in realization.

That jerk.

I fell into the water, sinking into the numbing temperature. It took me a moment to gain the momentum I needed to stand up out of the water. I was soaked through, my body beginning to shake as the breeze slipped over my skin.

"Jared!" I screamed as I shoved my hair out of my face.

As I glared at him, I saw Zia looking at Luke dangerously. Apparently, the both of us were dropped into the freezing cold pond.  The two boys in front of us took in our glares, and, realizing how pissed off we were, began to back up, their hands up in surrender.

"Jared, man, I think we need to run if we value our lives!" Luke yelled as he began to turn and run away from us.

I looked at Zia.

"Operation Mud?" I asked her, referring to something we had done as kids.

She smirked in answer, and we took off after the two boys. We chased them, zipping between trees and structures. The two of us had kept up with our martial arts classes and had stamina, so we didn't have a hard time chasing after Luke and Jared. We slowed our pace a little bit, getting the boys to go where we wanted them to be.
