Chapter 16

Jared

"Uncle Jay, I'm going to play with Sammy, okay? Bye!" Emma yelled.

She ran off before I could say anything. I heard Megan laugh and gently squeeze my hand. I looked over at Megan to see she was smiling at the kids.

"She'll be fine, Jared," Megan told me in a soft voice.

"I don't trust her around boys. I don't like boys being around my niece," I grumbled, frowning.

Megan laughed and moved so she was in front of me. She kissed my lips and looked me in the eye. Her eyes had a twinkle of amusement in them.

"She's going to be fine, Mr. Bodyguard. I was six when I met you. I was younger than Emma is right now," she reminded me.

"But that was different," I protested.

"How?"

"We were friends. Besides, I don't like the way Sam looks at her," I stated.

"You're over protective of her, Jared. And in case you forgot, you used to look at me the way Sam most likely looks at Emma. I've seen the way Emma looks at you, Jared. She trusts you and she loves you. If she likes this Sam, she will tell you," Megan reassured me.

I looked at the beautiful girl in front of me. I still wasn't sure how I had been lucky enough to have her back in my life. She had been through hell and back, and yet managed to be a beautiful person. She was so strong, so determined.

I kissed her, letting my feelings flow through. She responded back immediately, one hand on my cheek and the other still holding my hand. I pulled her closer by her waist.

We pulled away and I rested my forehead against Megan's. She looked in my eyes, her eyes showing intense feelings. I knew Megan rarely expressed herself. She was the type of person who would always listen to others, but didn't bother putting her feelings out there.

"I need to tell you something," she murmured.

"Tell me while we walk," I said.

There was a nice, spring breeze blowing through, making the evening the perfect temperature. Megan loved these type of evenings. We had spent almost every afternoon after school together, just talking. It was refreshing.

"I talked to my dad the other day, despite the anger I felt towards him," Megan told me.

"How'd it go?" I asked, looking at all the kids and couples at the park.

"Well, he told me why I was the one that had been abused and why Zia was kept from me. It turns out her mom was murdered and Zia had to be protected. It doesn't help that her dad's rich and all of that. He said he understood if I didn't want to go meet her, but I told him I was still willing to meet her. We leave the same day we get out for spring break," she told me.

"That's next week," I stated.

"Yeah, it is," she sighed.

"I'm going to miss you," I murmured as I stopped her and pulled her into a hug.

"Why? You're going with me, aren't you?" she asked.

I pulled away and stared at her, confused.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Oh my gosh, I forgot to tell you!" Megan exclaimed. "I talked to your mom about the whole situation, and she said she was okay with you going, if you wanted to."
