Megan

"Megan, could you stay behind after class today?" my teacher asked me.

I groaned internally. It was the last period of the day, and I had been looking forward to going home. I was so close to making it through the day.

"Sure," I answered.

He nodded, and I went back to my work. Thankfully, class was easy today. We were doing a worksheet that was a glorified quiz. Our teacher wanted to know what we had learned far this term, and I wanted to roll my eyes. I missed the class parties we used to have in grade school on the last days before a break.

The bell rang, dismissing everyone but me. My classmates piled their worksheets on the teacher's desk on their way out. I packed up my things and shouldered my bag as I walked to his desk, setting my worksheet down on the others'.

"I won't keep you long," he assured me. "It's the last day, and I'm sure you're eager to get off campus."

I smiled sheepishly in response.

"I wanted to check in with you quickly. You've been having some health problems lately, is that right?" he checked.

I nodded. "I'm doing better now, and I'm hoping I don't run into any other problems after the break."

"I'm glad to hear that. If you need extra time, please let me know. I'm happy to accommodate where I can. You're one of my best students, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in a job after spring break."

I looked at him, confused.

"I have a student who's struggling in this class, and I think they could benefit from you tutoring them. It would be a couple times a week, maybe an or hour two after school if you're interested. That kind of thing looks great on a college application," he explained.

"Can I think about it? I have a lot on my plate at the moment," I answered honestly.

"Of course! Get back to me after the break. I completely understand if you don't have the capacity or don't want to. I thought I'd offer it to you first."

"I appreciate that," I replied gratefully. "I'll have an answer by the time we're back from break. Have a great one."

I said my goodbyes and left the class, rushing to my locker. The school was clearing out quickly, everyone eager to start their breaks. I didn't see Jared at my locker, so I pulled out my phone.

Wesley: Waiting by my bike when you're ready

I smiled to myself as I rushed to put my things away. Because I had pushed myself, I had no homework to do over break. I grabbed the one book I needed for my English class and tucked it into my bag, grateful for the lack of weight.

"You should be more careful," a voice spoke to me.

I jumped.

I turned to see the custodian leaning against the lockers across the hall, his hands in his pocket. I shut my locker and faced him, trying to keep panic off of my face. We were the only two in the hallway.

"S-sorry?" I got out.

"Things aren't what they seem, kid. You need to be more careful. It's easy to get hurt when you're not paying attention," he answered.

I frowned in confusion. "Is that a threat?"

He shrugged. "Consider it a warning. Have a great break."

With that, he walked away. I stared after him in confusion. What did he mean by that? Was he not a threat? Was there someone else?

I shook my head out of my thoughts and speed walked to Jared's bike.
