Chapter 10

Megan

"What's he doing here?" my dad asked me.

I had made him step outside onto the porch because I knew the conversation between us was going to be serious, and it would have been rude to make Jared leave.

"He can come over if he wants to. He's Danny's friend," I told him.

"Megan, you don't even know the boy. So what if he's Daniel's friend? Daniel's not even here," my dad practically snapped.

"He's Danny's friend, and I know him too. We go to school together. And in case you've forgotten, Dad, I don't need your opinion anymore," I snapped.

"Where is Daniel? You're too young to be home alone with a boy."

"He's with Alyssa. And I'm 17 goddamn years old! I'm not too young. And I've been through worse, all thanks to you," I hissed.

That had been a low blow.

The anger disappeared from my dad's face and he looked sad and vulnerable. I felt bad, but my dad had hardly ever been a father to me. Danny had been there for me, not my dad.

"Megan, you know I'm sorry for that. I-I never meant to cause you pain. It wasn't me. It was the alcohol and drugs," my dad said.

"You still hurt all of us. I didn't care when you drank, until you began to hurt us. But why me, Dad? Why me? I was so small," I answered, my voice quivering.

"I don't know, Megan. I wish I could take all of that and remove it from your life. I never meant to give you any pain," he answered.

My dad tried to touch me, but I moved out of reach. I felt tears escape as I shut my eyes. My voice was shaky when I spoke.

"I don't know, Dad. It's because of you I don't have my memory, and yet, I don't have it in me to hate you. Please, just leave me alone," I begged.

"Okay, but our conversation isn't done, Megan. Call me when you have the chance. I'm sorry for barging in like this," he added, sincere.

I nodded, thankful he was being considerate. Despite everything, my dad had decided to check himself into a rehab center and had gotten better. He and my mom weren't together and they wouldn't be together, but they were back to being friends. It was only fair I gave him a chance.

"I'll see you later, then, Dad. I promise to call when I have the chance," I told him with a smile.

He nodded and touched my shoulder before walking back to his car. I waved to him as he drove away and then walked back inside, lost in thought. I sat down on the sofa, oblivious to my surroundings.

"Hey, you okay?" I heard Jared ask me.

I looked up too see him standing over me, concern etched all over his face.

The sight looked familiar to me for some reason, but I couldn't think of why.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm good," I told him with a smile.

"Everything okay with your dad?" he asked.

"Yeah. He just wanted to talk to me about something, but it's going to have to wait. I didn't want to get into right now," I explained.

"Okay. Well, we can watch the movie until your brother and 'Lyssa get here?" he checked.

Sounds good to me," I answered.
