Chapter 4

Jared

"I thought you said she hated parties!" Jason shouted over the music.

We were watching Megan Stewart dance, and damn, she danced well.

"I didn't know! I figured she wasn't into the stuff!" I shouted back.

Jason shook his head and left somewhere, leaving me to my thoughts. Megan was a good looking girl, but she looked amazing tonight. She usually dressed down to school.

"Hey, do you want to dance?" I heard someone ask me.

I turned to see a girl looking at me. I looked her over. She didn't impress me. She was a wearing a mini skirt with a top that could probably pass off for a bra and high heeled shoes. I knew her kind well.

"I'm good, thanks," I answered, leaving outside to get some fresh air.

Danny had a nice condo. It was spacious and there was a small balcony. I decided to go there; the balcony had a nice view. I walked out there, only to be surprised by the scene.

Some drunken idiot seemed to be pressing a girl against the side, but it didn't look like she was enjoying herself. When she tried to push the guy away, I caught a glimpse of the girl. It was Megan.

"Get the hell off of me!" I heard her snap.

Megan tried to fight her way out, but the guy was practically putting all his weight on her. On top of that, he was drunk. Bad combination, added to the fact they were on a balcony.

"No. You're hot," I heard him slur.

I felt myself get mad and protective. Without fully realizing it, I put my hand on the guy's shoulder and turned him towards me. I resisted the strong urge to punch him.

"You should let the lady breathe," I said, surprised at how calm I sounded.

"Who the hell are you?" the idiot asked.

"You don't need to know," I snapped.

"She's mine. Back off," Drunk Boy argued.

For some reason, that made me snap. I had no clue what was wrong with me.

"She's not interested. Why don't you find someone else?" I growled, glaring at him.

The idiot got the message and stumbled back into the party. Danny had some weird friends, I thought. I needed to talk to him about who he invited over.

"Thank you," Megan whispered.

Her expression made me pull her into a hug. She clung on to me as if I were her lifeline or something. I lightly squeezed her in a reassuring manner.

"Shh. It's okay," I murmured as I rubbed her back soothingly with one hand.

"I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't come in time," I heard her say.

"It's okay, Megan. I won't let anyone hurt you," I whispered.

It felt nice to have Megan in my arms after years. It felt right to me, as if she belonged with me. I knew I had an image to uphold as the school's bad boy, but I didn't care at the moment. I had Megan in my arms and I wanted to tell her the truth. However, I knew that wasn't a possibility because it would only cause her more pain than actual joy.

She pulled away and looked at me.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

"I needed a breath of fresh air," I answered.

"Oh," she answered.

"What are you doing here?" I asked her.

"This is my brother's place. I can come here if I want to. But what are you doing here?" Megan asked.

"Danny's my friend, and I know he's your brother. I meant, what are you doing out here?" I asked.

"Same reason as you. And, Danny? Since when has this bromance been going on?"

"Jealous, are we, Stewart?" I teased.

"Not even in your dreams, Wesly. He's my brother," Megan snapped.

I tried to suppress a smile, but it slipped out. This girl was definitely amusing.

"What's so funny?" she demanded.

"You. You're funny," I told her, smiling.

"What do you mean?" she asked, confused.

"Your expressions are funny. It's like you're trying not to hit someone or you're just embarrassed half of the time," I explained. "Although, I suppose you should be embarrassed. Did you get the food out of your clothes?"

"Shut up Wesly! It's not funny! And if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have gotten food all over me in the first place," she snapped.

"I didn't do anything. You were the one who fell for me," I teased.

"You're such a cliché," she retorted.

"An attractive cliché, you mean?" I teased.

"You're so narcissistic," Megan responded, annoyance clear on her face.

I laughed.

"Come on, Megan. Let's go," I said to her.

"Where?" she asked, looking at me.

"There's a party over there and we happen to be the only two people not having fun," I answered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"You go, Jared. I need a minute alone," she told me.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure," she answered rolling her eyes. "I can take care of myself. I just need a moment to myself."

"Doesn't seem like you can take care of yourself," I teased, moving out of the way before Megan could hit me.

"You're so annoying!" she called after me.

"You know you love me," I teased, giving her a wink.

I heard her swear, and I went back to the party, knowing I would have to talk to Daniel about it tonight or even tomorrow morning. He had invited me to stay the night at his place because it had been a while since we last hung out. Until I found Daniel, I planned to keep an eye on Megan. She wasn't leaving my sight for the rest of the night.
