The next morning, I awoke to a familiar sight. Megan's hair was partly splayed behind her, her mouth slightly open as she slept. She had one hand on her stomach and the other was clutching my shirt. I smiled as I leaned over and gave her a light kiss.
I untangled myself carefully and walked into my bathroom to freshen up for the day. I went through my routine quickly, knowing I needed to talk with my mom and sister before they left for the day. I winced at the lingering soreness in my body. I was grateful I had the day off from training today.
"Good morning. I'm surprised you're awake so early on your break," my mother greeted me.
"Megan slept over last night," I told them.
Their eyes snapped to me.
Reyna opened her mouth to tease me, but I interrupted her. "There was an intruder in her room."
Their faces turned to shock and fear.
"Who was home with her? Is she okay?" my mom asked.
"She was home alone. Her mom got called in last night, apparently. She slept here last night after the intruder left. I didn't want her to go back home before it was all checked out," I explained.
"I don't know that she's going to be safe at all in her home at this point. What if they decide to enter through the balcony next time?" Reyna pointed out.
I grimaced. "I had the same thought."
"That poor girl has been terrorized long enough. I hope they figure out who's behind it," my mom stated with a sigh.
Reyna and I made eye contact. Our mother was essentially clueless, or at least as far as we were aware.
"It was scary," I admitted. "But she's okay now, and I think her family will be home later today. Her mom got called in last night."
"We'll offer whatever support we can to the Stewarts. How are you holding up, honey?" my mom asked.
"Honestly? I feel shaken," I admitted. "Last night could have gone downhill so fast, but I think it was pure dumb luck that it didn't. Megan jumped from her balcony to mine, which is insane to me."
"She made that jump?" Reyna questioned, shocked.
"I don't know she had that in her. Maybe it was the adrenaline," I guessed.
"I've been sneaking out to train," Megan's voice interjected our conversation.
I turned to see her walking into the kitchen wearing my shirt and a pair of her leggings.
"Weren't you told not to do any kind of strenuous activities?" my mom questioned her.
She nodded, guilt all over her face.
"Well, breaking the rules this time may have saved your life," Reyna admitted.
Megan joined us at the island and wrapped her arms around herself. I noticed she had been doing that more often lately. I couldn't blame her. I was terrified, and I wasn't even the one being targeted.
"I couldn't sit around, especially when I started remembering things," Megan confessed, picking at my shirt.
My mother walked over to Megan and pulled her into a tight hug. Megan closed her eyes as she took comfort in my mother's arms. The two of them had been close when Megan and I had been kids.
"You can stay with us as long as you need to, okay? There's plenty of space, and your mother is obviously welcome as well," my mom reminded Megan.
Megan nodded, thanking her.
