Dorothy's POV

I woke up to the irritating sound of my alarm. I groaned and I scrambled to my feet realizing that today was the day of my interstate surf off. The winner would be crowned the under-18 surf champion of America.

I wore my wetsuit and put on a baggy grey hoodie and black sweatpants on top of it and proceeded to leave the house. I decided I should only have an espresso. It's not a good idea to be too full before a competition.

When I got downstairs I noticed that Sophie was already in her car.

Sophie's POV

I was scrolling through my phone for what felt like 30 years until I suddenly heard my car door open that's when I noticed it was Dorothy.

"I almost thought you would make me late," Dorothy said with a smug grin on her face.

"Do I look like I want to hear you rant?" I flat-out stated.

Dorothy let out a mischievous laugh, "Enough with the small talk let's cut to the chase," She responded when she finally caught her breath.

I took in a deep breath, "I don't... I think there is something fishy about Alex," I told her my voice sounding extremely small.

"What do you you mean?" Dorothy questioned me with a curious expression.

"Huh, I don't know call me crazy but Alex seemed to be trying to replace Dad trying to get to know every nook and crook about us and there were strange questions about our financial state, trying to know where we keep our money. Very strange don't you think," I confessed.

"Now that you're mentioning it I think you're right he was acting extremely suspicious," She replied.

"I also overheard him asking Mom about our Dad's disappearance," I said.

"Why would he want to know about Dad's disappearance? It's an extremely sensitive topic you know," Dorothy sighed.

"Something about Dad's disappearance isn't right so I think I am going to investigate it, on my own... and you can help if you're willing to," Sophie murmured.

"Soph, I don't think...it's not a good idea to investigate, what if it spirals out of control?" She queried me.

"Then we spiral it back into control," I answered her.

Tension was looming in the air and the air kept growing thicker and thicker.

"Let me know if you're willing to help," I said trying to break the uncomfortable silence.

After what felt like the most unbearable 5 minutes of my life we arrived at the beach for Dorothy's surf-off.

Dorothy's POV

It was time for the third and final round of the competition. I and a guy from Florida were tied at a whooping score of 158.4 the winner would be crowned the best under-18 surfer in America.

"Up next... Dorothy Gordon," The judge announced.

It was time for the surf off that would make or break my surfing career.

Sophie's POV

I sat at the edge of the beach when Theo, my boyfriend, came to sit down next to me.

"Hi," Theo cheerfully stated.

"Hi," I replied.

"Do you think she'll win, " He queried me.

"Of course, she will win she's Dorothy she's been surfing since she was seven," I answered him.

Theo just let out one of his warm laughs, which made a smile appear on my face.
