Guns And Laces

Bump On The Road

Chapter Thirty

"You'll be able to catch him over this beautiful, dead fuckin' body. But even then, he will be the one coming after you."

-Rheannon.

“Do you love my brother?” Aegeus asked as I poured coffee in his mug.

I looked up at him, partially surprised at the odd timing of this question, “When it comes to love, I’ve only ever known your brother.” I answered truthfully.

A smile lit up his face as he shook his head, “You’re perfect for each other.”

We are, aren’t we? Only ever prioritising one another.

I slid him his mug over the counter and took a seat opposite to him, “Has he always been like this?”

Aegeus took a sip of his coffee, “Like what?”

“Selfless.” I shrugged.

He sighed and nodded, “For as long as I could remember, yes. He took us in when he was a teenager himself. All my life, I have only ever seen that man buried in work. Be it office, his university, or looking after his siblings. He’s juggled between all of that so effortlessly that we’ve always been in awe of him.” Aegeus paused and gazed out the window behind me.

I could see his eyes had become glossy.

“Eirene and I we never needed a father because Angelo was always there. I can’t recall a single moment where we needed him and he didn’t leave everything to be with us. Even if it was something as small as school work. Over time, we grew so fond of him that despite Helena being Eirene’s best friend, we both had doubts deep down. About their relationship. Helena wasn’t the kind to understand family dynamics…she proved it as well. I’ve always wanted a better person for my brother. A better woman…and I know that it’s you.” He finished and sipped on his coffee like he hadn’t just shaken me to my bones with his words.

I never thought I could love that man any more than I already but he’s proven me wrong every single time. I may have done something exceptionally amazing to have been blessed with a man as such.

I wrapped my fingers around the mug and stared at the smoke blowing out of it, “Do you think that…your brother is worth sacrificing for?” I asked not because I was having any second thoughts but because deep down I wanted him to know that he was worth it.

He deserved it more than anyone else.

“What kind of sacrifice?” Aegeus asked inquisitively.

My gaze snapped up to meet his and I shrugged, “Any kind.” I whispered.

“As long as that doesn’t involve you sacrificing your life, we’re good.” He joked.

I chuckled half heartedly, “I guess so.”

“Because Rheannon if you ever do that, my brother will be very hurt. And hurt Angelo is not nice…his hurt turns into anger and then there’s no going back from that. You’ve only ever seen the nicer side of him and believe me when I say this you don’t wanna see how ugly it can get when he’s angry.” He finished his cup of coffee and I eyed the mug for a second before looking back up at him.

“I love him.” I stated.

“I know that so whatever it is that you’re thinking get rid of it because it’s not gonna happen. He’s coming back today and you’re not leaving the house until he does.” His voice was authoritative as he scrutinised my face.
