Chapter Thirty-Eight

"You'll be able to catch him over this beautiful, dead fuckin' body. But even then, he will be the one coming after you."

-Rheannon.

I was playing with Ophelia when Eirene knocked on the already open door before stepping inside, “I hope I am not interrupting.”

I chuckled, “She is literally your daughter.”

Eirene joined in on the laughter, “Truly I forget that sometimes. She’s always hopping from one person to another. My little bundle of joy.” She sighed lovingly and planted a kiss on Ophelia’s cheek.

As if sensing her mother, she quickly began to wiggle in my lap and leaned towards Eirene who picked her up in her arms before hugging her close to her chest, “My little angel.” She spoke to her in those baby voices that I absolutely adored.

“She’s grown onto everyone so quickly, I am amazed.” I spoke. “I hope one day we are able to return all the love that she’s given to us.”

Eirene turned to look at me, a soft look in her eyes that I had never seen before. She was beautiful inside and out. Every single time I looked at her I knew why people say inner beauty reflects on the outer surface.

She fit that phrase perfectly.

“I hope I am able to return all the love to you, as well. All the love and support that you had given when I needed it the most.” She spoke softly and sat opposite to me on the bed.

Ophelia crawled out of her lap and onto the bed where all her little toys were scattered. She had recently started to crawl and the child loved it. This was now her favourite hobby and she preferred it instead of being held.

I smiled in confusion, “What are you talking about?”

“Angelo told me that you were admitted into a shelter by his mother. And that she came to visit you as well,” She began to speak and for some unknown reason my heart started to pound against my ribcage. Where she was going with this? I didn’t know.

A soft smile tugged at her lips as her eyes roamed my face, “You are so beautiful, you know. Almost a rare kind. The fact that I couldn’t recognise you earlier.” She took a pause and shook her head as if she was disappointed in herself. “Remember she told you that she was visiting someone?” She asked and I nodded my head.

“She was there to meet Aegeus and I. We were living in that orphanage after our mother was brutally killed by my father.”

A gasp left my mouth as I took in her appearance once again, “God, it was you?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

She nodded and smiled through her tears, “It was me. Your roommate. God, I wish we would have met earlier. I wish I had recognised you back then at the hospital. It wasn’t until Angelo mentioned that it all clicked in place.”

Without thinking, I leaned forward and quickly wrapped my arms around her shoulder, “I am so sorry for everything you had to go through. And I am so glad we know each other from way before. You brought me whatever little happiness I had in my life. You and Aegeus both.” I said and my own tears fell.

I was so happy. So elated. I often thought about these two but along the years, I had suppressed most of my memories because in the end, I always wound up in a dark place. And I didn’t want that.
